Smartphone Apps of the Month- November

Isn’t Thanksgiving great? No other national holiday gives you as much of an excuse to feast to your heart’s content. More importantly though it’s a special day to show gratitude. I’m thankful for having many kind friends, co-workers and family, but also for the variety of things to learn, see and enjoy in the world around me. And, the apps I’m reviewing this month are some you’ll be grateful for, too, because they bring people together in many beneficial ways.

Pinterest—for iPhone and Android

PinterestAs a young sprout, long before personal computers, I loved pinning things up at home or at school for all to see. Like for Thanksgiving when I made those turkeys and pilgrims out of construction paper. I still love to show and tell today. In our largely digital world, a great app called Pinterest is the modern equivalent. Although this app’s been around for years, it’s really caught on with the masses lately.

Pinterest is great, especially heading into the holiday season. There are recipes, décor ideas, crafts and more, and users can create boards to track each. It makes holiday planning much easier by helping me discover and save any visual ideas I come across. I even use Pinterest for simple things like saving recipes. When you find something that interests you, it’s simple to save or share it. You just use the “Pin It” button!

Use Pinterest also for news articles to read or save, bookmarking holiday gifts or explore for new ways to save money. Hobbyists and outdoors enthusiasts love it since every interest from archery to ziplining can be found there. I love to pin all of my travel inspirations, too, like road trips and family outings. Being able to Pin It all from my cellphone is really convenient as well. Hmmm…maybe I’ll pin my Christmas wish list on Pinterest, too.

One Today—for iPhone and Android

One todayWhat if there was an app that gave you one easy way to better the world today? Well actually there is, and it’s called One Today. Each day, it features a new charitable organization, and if the user likes its mission, they can give $1 through the app. It’s that simple! I think One Today is a fantastic way for me to learn about and give back to many worthy organizations.

Maybe you’re passionate about rescuing animals, eradicating illiteracy or making donations applied directly to cancer research. Your One Today donation directly helps others, such as the 40-year-old mother of five children in Kenya who used her loan to purchase seeds to plant and sell vegetables, then fully repaid it 14 months later. $5000 this month can help 1600 people around the world to fully fund loans to 120 farmers in need. Your dollar can grow hope, not just food!

It’s understandable that you might be thinking, “How do I know for sure these guys are who they say they are?” Rest assured, One Today only benefits U.S.-based nonprofits that are all validated by the IRS and Google. 100% of the donation goes to the nonprofit, and there are never any transaction fees. Since they’re also tax-deductible, you get a convenient, year-end tax receipt.

I enjoy being able to select from a long list of causes, or new projects to donate to. You could also call One Today ‘the generosity app.’ I must say, it’s truly inspirational to see other people’s good deeds in action. The app features real-world photos and short stories related to the specific cause. And, I like how they explain how my dollars actually make life better for someone else.

Oh, and these are the kinds of non-profits that only want your kindness, not your private information. I never get barraged by any contact from them after I donate my dollar. Instead, I feel great knowing that I’ve done another random act of kindness.

As they say, give a little, change a lot. With the One Today app I definitely can, and I hope you will too this Thanksgiving. Let’s all make caring contagious.

Is it possible to trace a locked phone when the battery has probably run out.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a good question, Lenny. I was able to take a look at your account, and I see that you have the Mate 2. If you’ve misplaced the phone, there isn’t an easy way to track it if the battery has run out. If you can’t find it, please call us at 888-345-5509 and we can suspend your service. That way, if someone comes across it, it can’t be used for any calls or data usage without your consent. We hope you’re able to find the phone, and we’re happy to help you with the next steps as needed. Thank you for letting us know!

Been looking for a phone with captions, that’s wireless. Is there such a phone? Loss of hearing suddenly in best hearing left ear. In right ear had only mediocre hearing. Thanks for any info.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We’re happy to help you, Jeanne. We offer the Doro PhoneEasy 626, which allows you to use large type and a loud ringer, and it is also hearing aid compatible. You could also use our SIM card with another type of phone if you find one that has captions or other features. Just make sure it is unlocked and meant for the GSM network. You would be able to take advantage of our Risk-Free Guarantee with either of these options so you could have a chance to try our service and phones to see if they are a good fit. Our customer service team can talk with you about the features at 888-345-5509, or they can answer any questions you have via email at [email protected] if that is more convenient. We look forward to helping you find the right phone for your needs! Thank you for posting, and we hope you have a wonderful day!

How do I block an automated phone recording?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

It’s pretty similar to blocking an unwanted phone call, Pam. I was able to take a look at your account, and I see you have the Moto G EXT. If you’ve updated it to Lollipop, it’s simple to send any caller straight to voicemail so you won’t be bothered. You can add numbers to this list by saving the contact. Then select the settings and select the All calls to voicemail option. That way you won’t need to be inconvenienced. If you have any questions or need help, just call us at 888-345-5509 and we will be happy to walk you through this. Thank you for posting, and we hope you have a great day!

What is the square deal protection plan? Can I drop it?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Dave. If you’ve added a Square Trade protection plan, you’re protected against drops and spills. You can remove it at any time, just give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we’ll be happy to assist you. We appreciate you taking the time to comment today!

  5. Gwen says

I bought Consumer Cellular phones on ebay but I can’t activate them because they didn’t come with a box. Can I use the IMEI number or serial number on the phones? I’ve tried to call but it leaves me on hold too long, I emailed but have not gotten an email back yet.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Gwen. We can assist you with adding these phones to your account. This may require a few steps, so working with you over the phone may be the best option. You may try the callback feature so that we can call you back at a convenient time if that will work better for you. We appreciate your patience and look forward to speaking to you!

  6. Don Pinnell says

When I set my Galaxy J1 up to function as a “Mobile Hotspot”, it tells me “No internet available.” Do I need an extra APP for this function? Or does CC have more comprehensive instructions to do this? Thanks for any help

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Don. There are a few settings we need to change on our end for use of hotspot tethering, so we’re happy to see if this option is available for you. Please give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we’ll get that resolved. We do want to remind you that using any device to tether can result in high data usage, so we don’t recommend using this function exclusively for your internet needs. Thank you for reaching out to us and we look forward to assisting you!

AARP discount? I have been AARP for two years.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great news, Tom! You too can receive the AARP discount if you are a current member. Just give us a call at 888-345-5509 with your membership number and we’ll get that added to your account. Thank you for asking!

  8. Sharen Corpuz says

Is wi fi personal hot spot avail to us (your customers?)

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Sharen. Some of our LTE Android phones and our iPhone models can be used as a personal hotspot. If you’re interested, we just need you to give us a call at 888-345-5509 to set it up. It is always a good idea to use the hotspot feature sparingly as it can use a lot of data from your plan, so please keep that in mind. We appreciate you taking the time to comment today!
