Smartphone Apps of the Month—July

Let’s have some fun this month! There are so many wonderful things to do in the summer that it can be hard to keep track of them all. Parades, parties, and picnics—my July calendar is overflowing with plans for good times and great meals.

To help you get the most out of your summer, I’m sharing a couple smartphone apps that will let you plan a big day out or host a fabulous barbecue with just a few swipes of your smartphone.

Eventbrite Fun Local Events—for iPhone & Android

EventbriteHere’s a fast and easy way to discover all the fun things going on near you. From a pancake breakfast to a large community event, you can find out all the important details, share information with friends, and even sign-up or purchase tickets with this app.

You’ll get personalized recommendations based on likes and dislikes that you set up for all sorts of different activities. This can be done as soon as you download the app, or later on. Choose from concerts, festivals, free events and much more. You can create your own personal events calendar, and even be admitted using this app instead of paper tickets. Everything you’ll want to know is here, including maps of the venue and directions to help you get there.

I’m always up for new adventures, so I was truly excited by the fascinating variety of events listed on this app. You’ll discover activities you never would have heard about otherwise. It’s like having a party planner right in your pocket!

SideChef: Step-by-Step Cooking—for iPhone & Android

SidechefNothing beats gathering with your family or neighbors for a savory summer cookout, or hosting a scrumptious dinner party for your closest friends. If you’re looking for some fresh ideas on what to serve, the SideChef app offers more than 1,000 great recipes plus step-by-step video instructions on how to prepare them.

There’s something for every taste and skill-level, and new recipes are being added all the time. The focus is squarely on the cooking: photos and easy-to-follow instructional videos detail every step of the meal preparation process. You can follow along and pause or rewind if you need to hear or see something again. You can also use the hands-free feature with voice control, meaning no more smearing your cookbook with butter, flour or gravy!

Summer is so short. Why not learn a few new recipes, and zest up your next potluck in the process? I recently made the Korean Beef Bulgogi tacos for our neighborhood block party, and was delighted with both how easy it was to prepare, and how quickly the platter emptied at the party.

So now that you know where to get all the information you need—get out there and enjoy a busy, and delicious, July!

How can I used Data for GPS on flip phone?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Fonda. In general, most flip phones don’t have the ability to use GPS navigation, but if your phone does have that ability, it requires data. In order to access the maps, your phone must access data from the towers. We’re happy to talk with you about your phone and see if this is an option for you. Just give us a call at 888-345-5509 at your convenience, and we can assist you. We appreciate you taking the time to post today!

I signed up with Consumer Cellular and am using a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 phone? My question is: Was this phone unlocked by Consumer Cellular? If not, how do I get it “unlocked”?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a common question, Bob. Devices are “locked” to the original carrier by default. If you originally purchased your phone from AT&T, is will need to be unlocked by them. In most cases, it is as simple as giving them a phone call or visiting a store. Once your phone is unlocked, you’ll be able to use it with our SIM card quite easily. If we can answer any other questions you may have, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 888-345-5509. Thank you for taking the time to post, and we hope you have a great day!

When AT&T sells you a discounted phone, they don’t make much money by doing this, so they want you to use their service for a few months so they can still make a profit. After a few months you can ask them to “unlock” the phone so you can use that phone with another carrier, such as Consumer Cellular. So if you just bought the phone recently they might not be willing to unlock it for you, but if you have had it for several months there should be no problem. Most carriers have this policy, it’s not just AT&T.

      • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for sharing, Paul. Locking a phone to a particular network is a pretty standard practice for all wireless companies, which is why we always remind customers to verify that their phone is unlocked before using it with our SIM card. We appreciate you taking the time to post!

I’m happy to help you, Sonia! It looks like you are using one of our SIM cards with your Galaxy S6. Setting up your voicemail is quick and easy. If I am downloading apps, are these apps in my phone or somewhere else?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Gloria. When you download apps to your Moto E LTE, they are saved to your phone. These same apps are also linked to your Google account, so if you have an Android tablet or other device, those same apps will also be made available to you. If we can answer any other questions you may have about using apps, please feel free to call us at 888-345-5509. Our representatives will be happy to assist you! Thank you for taking the time to post today, and we hope you have a great day!

I recently traveled on vacation to Cozumel, Mexico. I wasn’t able to use my 6S iPhone there at all. Does Consumer Cellular restrict usage in foreign countries? Other guests had no trouble using the wifi at our resort hotel.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for reaching out to us today, Margaret. Your Consumer Cellular phone is designed to work within the U.S. only, so you likely weren’t able to use a cellular connection while in Mexico. Using your phone with Wi-Fi is a great way to stay in touch when on vacation, and we’re sorry to hear that the Wi-Fi wasn’t working for you. If you like, we can work with you to troubleshoot that at 888-345-5509. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy your iPhone on your next getaway. We appreciate you taking the time to post, and we look forward to speaking with you soon!
