Connect Up to 30 People at Once with FaceTime Group Chat

For iPhone users, calling people using FaceTime has always been a great way to get up close and personal through the magic of video chat. Since Apple rolled out its iOS 12 update last fall, FaceTime is even more fun and flexible, with simple ways to add multiple people to the conversation.

To get started using all the new FaceTime “group chat” features, you’ll first need to make sure you’ve updated to iOS 12. If you haven’t already updated, go to Settings, tap General, then Software Update and download the new software.

Once you have iOS 12.1 installed, you’ll be able to make Group FaceTime calls. The devices that can participate in a video group call include the iPhone 6s or newer. And remember, the people you’re calling must also be using Apple devices to join in.

Here’s how to use the new feature:

Open the FaceTime app on your iPhone, then tap on the “+” sign in the top right corner. Search for and add all the contacts you want to chat with—you can now include up to 30 contacts on one call! Once you’ve chosen everyone, tap Video or Audio to place your FaceTime call. A FaceTime group call will then open on your device, with placeholder images for every person in the group chat. For extra convenience, the person talking will appear in the center of the screen, so it’s easy to keep track of the conversation.

Using FaceTime group chat offers a wonderful new way to bring the whole family together, no matter how far away they may be!

I downloaded new iOS for face time.
Tells turn off face time.did . ask me for apple I’d to turn on ?

    • Hi Carol, I’m happy to help with this today. This means that it needs the Apple ID that is used on the phone for things such as the play store in order to enable that feature. If you need to reset any passwords or set that up, you can visit Apple’s website to do so.

  4. Patti says

I have a Samsung Galaxy J3: not an Apple. Your instructions do not indicate Android method. Can I download and group Chat?

    • Hi Patti, thanks for your question. Android phones do not have the FaceTime app on the phone, this is something that is exclusive to Apple phones. Android phones would need to download a video calling app if you would like to have access to this kind of feature.

  5. Monica says

I have a Motorola phone that I have used with Telcel in Mexico. It is unlocked. I need a new number which I assume is associated your sim card, correct?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Monica, if you want to use your own phone with our service, it will need to be unlocked, GSM-compatible, and VoLTE-capable. We aren’t able to guarantee compatibility for all phone models, but we’ll do all we can to resolve any issues. All you would need to do is order a SIM card to use with the phone, and a new number would be assigned if you don’t have a number to transfer.
