This month marks Consumer Cellular’s 24th anniversary. When we started in 1995, there were no smartphones or data plans; rather, the antenna-laden cellphones of the day were all about minutes. Back then, calls cost 45 to 75 cents a minute, more if you were “roaming” beyond your provider’s home territory. During our first year in business, we started with 40 customers—and felt like we were on top of the world!
Fast forward two decades, and the wireless world has advanced in ways we never would have imagined when we started. Cellphones have evolved from mobile calling devices into high-powered pocket computers, with capabilities that would have seemed like science fiction in the mid-1990’s. Just last month, Consumer Cellular achieved a truly mind-boggling number, earning our 3.5 millionth customer, while also being named to the Inc. 5000 list of “The Most Successful Companies in America” for the 11th straight year.
Yet through all the changes, we’ve remained laser-focused on our original vision for the company: providing affordable access to the best technology for every type of wireless user. We’re still privately owned by our founders. And our support centers, which now employ more than 2,400 people, remain 100% U.S. based and fully committed to providing the best customer service in the business.
As we turn 24, I’m proud to say that at our core we’re the same hungry company that was thrilled to connect our first 40 customers with economical cellular service back in 1995. We may be a whole lot bigger now—and the technology a whole lot better—but our success is still earned one customer at a time. Thank you for growing with us, and we look forward to providing you with outstanding wireless service, whatever form it takes, for many years to come.
