What It Means to be Green

Consumer Cellular was recently honored as a company that’s doing whatever we can to minimize our carbon footprint. Once again, for the fourth year in a row, Oregon Business Magazine selected us as one of the “100 Best Green Companies” to work for in the state of Oregon. It took–and will always take―a lot of hard work from our employees to stay green, so credit for this award goes to them.

Maintaining an eco-friendly business is a challenge we take seriously and willingly. It’s a commitment we believe in, across the board, because we all know what’s at stake.

That’s why we tackle our carbon footprint in many ways, from the changes we made to our infrastructure to the recycling policies we offer our customers. For instance, all of our offices include motion-sensor lights, which help to reduce our energy consumption. We recycle 99 percent of our shipping by-products, and we replaced our old SIM cards with cards that use 50 percent less plastic.

100 Best Green

It’s not just our employees who help keep us green, though.  Our customers are helping, too. For each customer who signs up for our Email Billing program, we donate $5 to the National Parks Conservation Association. This worthy organization protects and enhances our National Parks for present and future generations.

And customers who recycle their old cell phones through us contribute as well. We provide customers with postage-paid envelopes and ask them to send us their old cell phones, which we sell to a recycling center. The money raised through these recycled phones is donated to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. It’s another win-win: together we help reduce what would have ended up as landfill and, at the same time, we help children in need of medical care.

I can remember as a kid seeing people throw litter out of their car.  I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. Fortunately, we live in a different world, and today most of us know better and not many people litter. We’re smarter about the trail we leave behind, our carbon footprint. So we turn off lights, buy fuel-efficient cars, recycle trash. And I believe it all helps.

We’re happy to win another award for our eco-friendly accomplishments. But we wouldn’t win anything without the generous and committed support of our employees and customers. Thank you, one and all, for being part of a great Green Team.
