Tuesday Tip: Make it Easy to Be Reunited with a Lost Phone

If you ever lost your smartphone, how could someone who found it contact you, especially if you’ve locked the screen?

Did you know Android devices allow users to display contact information on the lock screen?

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap “Security.”
  3. Tap “Screen Security.”
  4. Tap “Owner info.”
  5. Enter any contact information you’re comfortable posting on your lock screen (choose from name, email address, or phone number).

You’ve just made it easier for someone to contact you if your phone is ever lost. Please note: If your Android device is running a previous version of the operating system (Ice Cream Sandwich or earlier), there are several custom lock screen apps available to download for free. Just search for “free lock screen” in the Google Play Store.

Every TV show has the cops using a computer to location a cell phone. I needed that a few days ago when my phone went missing. I had last used it many miles from home.

I tried calling it. I heard the ring back, but could not hear the phone itself anywhere I thought it might be. Eventually I found it under the car seat, the battery had charge, but the ring had been set to silent.

How do I get that map to show me the phone was in my driveway and not inside the house?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Paul. While some smartphones have apps and other features that can show you where your phone is on a map, it is a bit more difficult for feature phones like your Doro 618. We’re so glad to hear that you were able to find your phone, and that your story has a happy ending. Thanks again for taking the time to comment!

Misplaced my phone some where between point A and point B. Tried calling. It rang but no answer. Is there a way to access my GPS remotely?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking! It really depends on the type of phone you have. If you have an iPhone, you can follow the steps in our blog here to see if Find My iPhone would be of assistance. You’ll also find similar instructions for an Android device. In the meantime, please call us at 888-345-5509 so we can place a hold on your line. That way, there won’t be any fraudulent usage if your phone is used by someone else. We hope you find your phone, and we’re happy to be of assistance if you need any help!

  4. Akbar Sharrieff says

I was on vacation and lost my phone in a taxicab. Called Consumer Cellular from my location to suspend operation of the phone for 30 days from July 23, 2017. If I purchase another phone using Consumer Cellular as my carrier, can the service from the lost phone be transferred to the “new” phone and keep my same number?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for reaching out to us, Akbar. I reviewed your account, and I see that Mary, our account advisor, was able to answer your questions. You can indeed keep your phone number and move it to a new device upon your return. If you decide to use another Android device, you can use the same Gmail account to sync your apps and contacts if you’ve saved them to that account. When you’re ready to order your new phone, please don’t hesitate to call us at 888-345-5509 and we will be ready to assist you. We appreciate you posting, and we hope you have a great day!

Great question, David! If you’re looking for the ability for loved ones to find you, a smartphone may be the better choice. You can enable an option on both iPhone and many Android models to make your location visible to trusted friends and family via the GPS feature. We’re happy to talk with you about the smartphone options available to you if you like. Just call us at 888-345-5509. We can help you find the perfect phone for your needs. 9. Michael says

I just want to know if there is a way to get the location of the other devices that are active on the account and how to do it

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Michael, thank you for posting. If you have an Android device that is linked to a Google account, then you can use Google’s “Android Device Manager” feature on their website to locate the device. If you have an Apple iPhone that is logged into an iCloud, then you can use the “Find My iPhone” feature on Apple’s iCloud website. If you don’t have a smartphone, it is likely that the device doesn’t have any location features available. The only way to locate it would be to call it if the battery has not run out.

My dad has a flip phone. Just basic. I pay for it he goes for long walks can I use gps to track him. Has dementia worried he will get lost.

    • Hi Sondra, great question, I can definitely understand wanting to have something like that in place for him. The flip phone doesn’t have the capacity to download any kind of app or GPS that could track him. You can look online to see if there is an app or another device that can track a phone number though and could be downloaded to your phone though as an option.

How do i find calls I made in February?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Jim, you can find a detailed list of all your calls by logging into your account here. You can either click on “View Usage Details” and use the drop-down at the top-right to select the billing period, or you can click “Menu” under the Billing section, and then click “Go To Billing”. There will be an “Invoices” tab, and each invoice will have your detailed usage for that billing period available as well.

Hello. My son’s phone was stolen. I just received a “silent” call from it. What do I need to do? He’s on my CC account. There was my bank info on it… cleaned out my checking. I’m out of my hometown until Tuesday.

    • Hi Julia, thanks for your post. I’m sorry to hear about what has happened with your son’s phone. We’d be happy to help with getting that line suspended and a new phone ordered for him. Give us a call at 888-548-6490 or you can also chat with us here for further assistance.
