Smartphone Apps of the Month—August

August is vacation time! It’s summer’s hottest month, and the clock is winding down on the long school break for our kids and grandkids. Get out there and have some fun!

To help with your travels, I’m showcasing some apps this month that are designed to enhance your time away from home. Whether your itinerary includes a simple road trip to the beach or jetting off to an exotic foreign destination, these apps will turn your mobile devices into invaluable traveling companions.

YouTube Music—for iPhone or Android

Youtube MusicWhen you’re on the road, it’s nice to have a variety of options for streaming media, especially music. It saves you the inconvenience of searching for radio stations or songs you like when you’re on a long drive and over-the-air stations are fading in and out. With most airports offering free Wi-Fi, it’s also a great way to unwind while waiting for your flight, blocking out the constant chatter and announcements around you with nice, soothing music!

For entertainment variety on the go, it’s hard to beat the latest offering from YouTube. The popular video service has expanded into a streaming music app called YouTube Music. It pairs with YouTube’s deep vault of video clips to offer some truly unique features that other streaming apps simply can’t match.

The music catalog here is huge—you not only find the songs you know, you’ll also find live or alternate versions, plus cover versions by other artists. The app creates a daily playlist for you called “My Mix,” combining songs you’ve listened to with new tracks it thinks you might enjoy discovering.

You can also see videos of artists performing the songs, or watch karaoke versions with embedded lyrics. There are even instructional videos on how to perform the song on a variety of instruments.

It’s so much fun to have access to the music you love right on your mobile device! Just remember that with this, or any streaming app, you’ll want to use Wi-Fi whenever possible. Most hotels, airports and coffee shops offer Wi-Fi, so you can enjoy listening to music or watching videos on the YouTube Music app just about anywhere you go for free. This way, you can save the data on your Connect Plan for other important things, like searching the web for fabulous restaurants or sharing all the photos you’ll take!

TripCase Travel Organizer—for iPhone & Android

TripcaseGreat news for anyone who, like me, can feel overwhelmed trying to keep track of printed boarding passes, maps, rental car confirmations—all those crucial documents you need when traveling but don’t want to carry around on easy-to-lose slips of paper. The TripCase Travel Organizer creates a handy way to centralize all your travel documentation right on your mobile device.

You can manually add your flight, train, hotel, rental car, and other information, or you can send all of your confirmations directly to TripCase to have them automatically organized for you. It’s reassuring to know you have everything you need right at your fingertips after a long flight, or a hectic day at the airport. The app uses an interface that’s easy to use both before you leave for your trip, and while you’re out and about.

You’ll have the option of seeing your trip in a timeline-based “itinerary” view, showing each step of your trip laid out with basic times and places, or an “action” view, which adds more specific detail for each step like flight alerts and other notifications.

Just like that, you’ve got an electronic file with all of your important travel documents right at your fingertips in place of folders, maps or sheets of paper to shuffle through. Let TripCase be your personal traveling secretary, right on your phone or tablet. You’ll never have to worry about misplacing your flight information or hotel address again.

Travel should be all about enjoying new experiences, creating wonderful memories and most importantly, relaxing! By having your favorite music with you on YouTube Music, and all your travel documents in order with TripCase, I know your August journey will be a restful and rewarding one!

I would like to see the Out of milk app come with the phones. Is a multi use shopping list. I would say I use that app no less than 10 times a week. If I am low on something I simply write it in and the next time I’m at the store I have it with me unlike a pen and note book.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the suggestion, David! It’s always great to hear from our customers about apps they find particularly useful. We appreciate you sharing!

  4. JOHN R WARD says

I recently purchased the apple 6 as I need it to pair with new hearing aids, but I got to tell you all the ads and “spam” I haft to spend time deleting everyday makes the phone more of a problem then a asset. I no longer want this phone, I need to buy a new steemer to go with the new Dora I will go back to. I have no qualms with Consumer Cellular, I have a phone for my benefit not the thousand sales people that have to bother me from sunup till after sundown ! sounds like an old crotchety man but I guess that is what I am Thank you I need to pay off the 6 and get a new streamer coming then I’ll be in touch .

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, John. I apologize for any frustration caused by the spam you’re receiving on the phone. If you’re interested in going back to your old phone, please give us a call at 888-345-5509 as we can either send you out a new SIM card for free, or reuse the old one in your Doro flip phone.
