As the year winds down, news outlets are filled with “Best of 2021” articles. We thought you’d be interested in discovering what smartphone apps made it onto best-of lists for 2021.
Whether you have an Android smartphone or an iPhone, here are 5 apps that made the best-of lists of popular online tech publications:
Craigslist – You may have used this online classified ads site on your computer, but the cellphone app is more recent. “It has a simple, non-fussy interface that’s reminiscent of the website version, where you can search for everything from jobs to furniture to cars,” says CNet, which rated it a top app of 2021. Google Maps –This essential app gives you directions from wherever you are to wherever you want to go—whether you’re driving, walking, or taking public transportation. “Google Maps virtually owns the navigation apps scene, and it remains one of the best apps ever,” according to the Android Authority website. Duolingo – “Duolingo is a fun way to learn a language,” says CNet. The app offers 39 languages, and lessons include reading, writing, speaking, and listening in your chosen language. Download it here for Android or here for iPhone.
MyFitnessPal – This app helps you stay fit by tracking what you eat. It includes a barcode scanner, a food database, and a recipe importer. TechRadar gave it a top rating saying, “The ability to connect exercise apps also means MyFitnessPal can become a kind of hub for your general wellbeing.” Download it here for Android or here for iPhone.
1Weather – There are several popular weather apps, but Android Authority claims, “1Weather is arguably the best weather app out there. It features a simple, paginated design that shows you the current weather, forecast for up to 12 weeks, a radar, and other fun stats.” Download it here for Android or here for iPhone.
I’ll respectfully disagree about 1Weather. For one thing, its “Next 24 hours” forecast is way off, e.g. its forecast for noon is lower than for the morning. I corresponded with them 6 months ago without resolution. Today Weather is much better: wide variety of weather services and widgets, great weather details

Just wondering why consumer cellular does not have any recommendations for apps that help stop robocalls. I have an iPhone and I have the unknown caller part of my phone turned on so these calls don’t ring. But I still get almost 15-20 robocalls each day. At least 3-4 will get through to my voicemail. This is an epidemic!
I then have to go and individually block every caller that’s fake.
Why does consumer cellular not have an app to help its more than a million customers? Is it laziness?
Even the existing apps on the market that do work will say their app won’t work if you have consumer cellular. So it’s road block after road block from other companies that say I can’t use their app if I use Consumer cellular.

Hi Elizabeth, we do have some recommendations for blocking spam calls from us, as well as other customers, on our blog here.
Standard call blocking will forward blocked calls to voicemail. If you don’t want calls forwarded to voicemail, you can look for call blocking apps that briefly answer the call and then hang up, which prevents them from being able to leave a voicemail.
Some app developers may not be aware that we are a reseller, so when selecting the carrier that you use we recommend selecting “AT&T”, since that is the network we operate on. We’ve had other customers do this with success on third-party call blocking apps.
