Do I have to buy a new phone to add it to my plan?

I did sign up the other day for a new account. I went to Target to buy the SIM card for a new number and asked the sales clerk if he could install it. We did all of the registration right there. He was great. Do I qualify for the $20 credit? Also he said that I should keep the receipt and the cost of the SIM may be refunded. Should I call in and speak to a rep about this or will it happen automatically? After two days with the phone and service I am loving it. I feel I have stepped out of the dark ages.

it has been a night mare getting my home phone hooked up was trying to keep my number but had to go buy a sim card for the home device which i will get that money refunded but i say if you are getting a home phone get a new number it is much easier i hope
