To be included on the list, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2012, and they must be based in the United States, privately held, for profit and independent (not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies) as of Dec. 31, 2015. Companies must have generated minimum revenues of $100,000 in 2012 and $2 million in 2015. Final selection of the Inc. 5000 companies takes place after extensive screening and interviews by reporters and writers for Inc.com.
