Consumer Cellular Updates Data Plans to Give Customers More Options, Capacity
New plans offer more data for the same price and add a new tier for frequent users
Portland, Ore. — Monday, January 23, 2012

Consumer Cellular (, the number one rated cell phone service provider and exclusive wireless provider for AARP members, has announced new data plans for its growing base of customers using data on a regular basis.

"We are updating our data plans to better meet the needs of our smartphone users," said Consumer Cellular CEO John Marick. "We’ve been talking with our customers, and what we’re hearing is that they want to stay connected and need more flexibility with their data plans, so we’re excited to bring them more data capacity at their current rates or the option to change plans. We’ll continue to offer all of these plans as no-contract plans, and subscribers can switch between plans without penalty at any time."

Consumer Cellular’s affordable data plans – called “Connect” plans – now offer customers five options, an increase over the previous four. In addition to the new top-level plan, Connect! Max, the preexisting four options allow customers a higher maximum number of megabytes of data usage for the same price. The following table outlines the five plan options and increased data thresholds.

Plan NameMonthly FeeOld # of MessagesNew # of MessagesOld # of MBsNew # of MBs

As wireless companies have been raising rates, limiting data usage and surprising their subscribers with exorbitant overage fees, Consumer Cellular has taken a different approach. They have reacted to an uptick in data usage by their key demographic by increasing allowances and providing more plan options. Additionally, Consumer Cellular offers free usage alerts to their subscribers as they approach monthly allowances of voice, data and text usage. Along with the free usage alerts, Consumer Cellular allows subscribers to easily switch to lighter or more robust service plans as often as they’d like to meet their changing needs.

Consumer Cellular has sent announcements of the new plans to current customers, as well as posted them to the company’s website. In addition, the company will continue to provide tips to customers through their website and inserts with new phone purchases about how to most efficiently utilize the data services on their phones – such as utilizing Wi-Fi options when available and avoiding frequent streaming of movies and music that can quickly sap monthly data allowances.
