Most smartphones of today also feature a dedicated night mode that is more than enough to let users capture some really amazing low light photos.

The newer sensors come in a 1/1.33-inch (or, as in the case of the recently released Samsung Galaxy S20 series, 1.176-inch) format, offering more than twice the surface area of previous 1/2.3-inch sensors. Doubling of the area means double the amount of light captured, which helps photos appear bright and enhanced.

Along with enhanced sensors, newer models of both iPhone and Android smartphones include “night mode” technology which utilizes their innovative multi-lens camera systems to optimize the light capturing capability of the larger sensors.

Beginning with its Galaxy S10, Samsung introduced Android users to the “Night Mode” feature, while Apple rolled out its version on models beginning with the iPhone 11. Night mode uses intelligent software to create sharp, grain-free photos with incredible color and detail by capturing multiple shots over several seconds which are then blended into a single high-quality photo.

For Android phones, night mode isn’t always on by default. If you don’t see an option for it on your main camera interface, you’ll find it in your camera options for activation. To use it, press the shutter button to take the photo. Be sure to stay still, as the shutter stays longer in this particular mode in an attempt to capture all that it can.

The handy part about iPhone’s night mode is that it automatically turns on when the camera detects a low-light environment. The night mode icon at the top of the display turns yellow when the feature is active. For the best results, hold your iPhone steady until the capture completes. Be sure to take advantage of your device’s enhanced night time photo capabilities to take your smartphone photography to the next level. Day or night, you can capture precious memories—and do it in style.

Shooting low light photos using your smartphone has become a lot easier thanks to upgraded camera features, like ever-larger image sensors.
