More than just a funny name, they\u2019re the\nactive items displayed on your phone\u2019s home or notifications screen that let\nyou check the weather, access an Internet search engine, view the latest\nheadlines, or check in on the stock market with a quick glance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell,\nthe word&nbsp;widget&nbsp;is a generic term for a bit of self-contained code\nthat displays a program, or a piece of a program, that is also (usually) a\nshortcut to a larger&nbsp;application on your phone.\nWidgets need to be downloaded and installed just like an app, and to use them\nmost effectively you\u2019ll want to make sure your phone is up to date with the most\ncurrent operating system\u2014most widgets require Android 9 or iOS 8 and above. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Android users, widgets are displayed on the\nhome page, and come in all shapes and sizes from simple 1-by-1 shortcut style\ntext boxes to eye-popping, full-page designs. To add a widget on an Android\nsmartphone, go to your home screen, touch and hold an empty space, then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tap&nbsp;<strong>Widgets<\/strong>. You\u2019ll see a list of what\u2019s\navailable to install. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Touch\nand&nbsp;hold a widget. You\u2019ll see images of your home screens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slide\nthe widget to where you want it. Lift your finger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>iPhone users&nbsp;can add widgets&nbsp;to what Apple calls\nthe Today View, which can be accessed by swiping right on the first home screen\non your&nbsp;iPhone. From here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scroll\nto the bottom and tap&nbsp;<strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap\nthe&nbsp;<strong>minus in the red circle<\/strong>&nbsp;to take a widget away, or\nthe&nbsp;<strong>plus in the green circle<\/strong>&nbsp;to add one. You\u2019ll see a list of\navailable choices. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap&nbsp;<strong>Done<\/strong>&nbsp;to\nsave your changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once widgets are installed, simply swipe to the right, or\npull down the <strong>Notification Center<\/strong>,\nto view them at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Later on, if you change your mind and want to add or\nremove&nbsp;a widget, you can do so at any time by following the same steps\nlisted above.\n\nIf\nyou haven\u2019t installed any widgets on your smartphone, give it a try!
