When we started in 1995, there were no smartphones or data plans;\nrather, the antenna-laden cellphones of the day were all about minutes. Back\nthen, calls cost 45 to 75 cents a minute, more if you were \u201croaming\u201d beyond\nyour provider\u2019s home territory. During our first year in business, we started with\n40 customers\u2014and felt like we were on top of the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward two decades, and the wireless world has advanced in ways we never would have imagined when we started. Cellphones have evolved from mobile calling devices into high-powered pocket computers, with capabilities that would have seemed like science fiction in the mid-1990\u2019s. Just last month, Consumer Cellular achieved a truly mind-boggling number, earning our 3.5 millionth customer, while also being named to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/inc5000\/2019\/top-private-companies-2019-inc5000.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Inc. 5000 list<\/a> of \u201cThe Most Successful Companies in America\u201d for the 11th straight year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet through all the changes, we\u2019ve remained laser-focused on\nour original vision for the company: providing affordable access to the best\ntechnology for every type of wireless user. We\u2019re still privately owned by our\nfounders. And our support centers, which now employ more than 2,400 people,\nremain 100% U.S. based and fully committed to providing the best customer\nservice in the business. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we turn 24, I\u2019m proud to say that at our core we\u2019re the\nsame hungry company that was thrilled to connect our first 40 customers with economical\ncellular service back in 1995. We may be a whole lot bigger now\u2014and the\ntechnology a whole lot better\u2014but our success is still earned one customer at a\ntime.
