As this technology improves by leaps and bounds, its many conveniences are being embraced by users of all ages. Conveniently, modern smartphones come with some form of digital assistant, letting you perform countless daily tasks hands-free using simple voice activation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first modern digital assistant installed on a\nsmartphone was Siri, which was introduced as a feature of the iPhone 4S in the\nfall of 2011. Since that time, offerings have grown to include the likes of\nGoogle Assistant, and Samsung\u2019s Bixby\u2013voice activated applications which\nrespond to a user\u2019s commands to do things like search the Internet, select and\nplay music, or compose and send messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early adopters were often stymied by the apps inability to\nrecognize certain sounds and speech patterns, resulting in miscommunications\nand erratic (though often times humorous) outcomes. But in just a few short\nyears, developers have overcome these shortcomings to the point where it\u2019s now\npossible for digital assistants to perform impressively sophisticated tasks\nwith accuracy and ease. Their capabilities have been refined so much that some\ncan even be programmed to interact with third party software to control things\nin your home like thermostats, lighting, and security systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital assistants can be accessed on your smartphone with just a\nfew simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Android users can access <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googlevoice&amp;hl=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Google Voice<\/a> using either the microphone icon on your keyboard or search bar, or by holding down your home key and saying \u201cOK, Google\u201d to get started. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For smartphones operating on Android 6.0 and above, you have access to the advanced capabilities of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googleassistant&amp;hl=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Google Assistant<\/a>, which integrates with all your Google apps to pull everything together with a few simple voice commands. To get started, just press and hold your home key.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iPhone users are probably already familiar with the friendly voice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/siri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Siri<\/a>. Hold the home key, say \u201cHey Siri,\u201d and ask her anything. Siri will learn names, your favorite places, and other useful information, so her help becomes uniquely personalized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you\u2019ve gotten used to using your digital assistant, you can even customize how to access it through your phone\u2019s Settings menu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re new to using digital voice assistants, or gave up on earlier versions, I highly recommend giving the latest Google Assistant or Siri a try.
