Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started with Consumer Cellular

There are many great reasons to join Consumer Cellular, and here’s another one: we make it easy to do!

If you, or a family member or friend, are ready to switch and start enjoying our low prices and great service, here’s a handy checklist that will help you through the process.

Remember, there are three convenient ways to do it: online, over the phone, or at a Target store near you.

To get started, you’ll want the following information handy:

  • Your current phone bill, to help make sure your phone number gets switched over to our service.
  • Your AARP card or membership number, so you get your exclusive discounts.
  • If a friend has referred you, have their name and cellphone number—you’ll each receive a $10 credit on your next invoice!

Next, you’ll need to select your monthly cellular plan:

  • You can view all of our affordable, no-contract options here.
  • If you’re not quite sure which cellular plan works best, just give us a call. We’ll be happy to review how you use your phone currently, and make a recommendation.
  • Keep in mind, with Consumer Cellular, there are no fees to switch your plan if you find you need more, or less. And our automatic upgrades mean that if you happen to go over your plan’s monthly limit, you’re automatically upgraded to the level that covers your usage for the best price, with no overage fees.

Finally, it’s time to choose a cellphone:

  • If you already have a cellphone you love, you may not even need to get a new one! With most unlocked GSM phones, you can switch to Consumer Cellular simply by replacing the SIM card in your current phone. You can learn more about this convenient option here.
  • If you are looking to start with a new phone, we offer an outstanding selection of everything from simple flip phones to flagship smartphones from some of the top manufacturers in the industry. You’ll find all of our choices here.
  • On many of our smartphones, you can even choose to use our EasyPay option, which let you pay the cost of your phone in $25 installments conveniently added to your monthly invoice.

And that’s really all there is to it! Our friendly, 100% U.S. based customer service team is here to answer any additional questions, or walk you through, step by step, to get your Consumer Cellular service up and running. Just call us at (888) 345-5509!

I am considering because all I have is 10 cents a minutes and I purchase it when ever I need it. So my question is who is your server, AT&T or Verizon. I live in a very small community, and cell services is spotty at best. Right now AT&T is my best bet because I have their tower in my back yard. Another question is if I will need web, unlimited text, and phone…on my existing iPhone6.

That’s a great question, Pauline. A credit or debit card is required to order any equipment online or over the phone. If you purchase equipment through one of our retail partners, then a credit or debit card may be required to be on your account, depending on the outcome of the industry-standard credit check.

I need know how to open pictures that were sent to my phone

Once the photo is saved, you’ll also be given an option to use it as your wallpaper or as the photo for a contact. Select “Yes” if you would like to do that, or “No” if you are finished. What is the difference between iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s? How do I know which one is right model for me? I realize you don’t have iPhone 6s, but I may purchase an unlocked iPhone 6s elsewhere and bring to you, that is if the iPhone 6s is a better choice. Thank you.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, George! The iPhone 6s is slightly larger than iPhone 6, with a similar screen. The iPhone 6s does feature 3D touch and a faster processor. Ultimately, both devices are excellent smartphones. If you have any other questions about either device, we’re happy to answer them at 888-345-5509. We appreciate you posting today!

  12. Antoine Speller says

Wow this is what I’m talking about. Listening to the customer. I’m glad I switched to Consumer Cellular. These new plans will save my family money in a time we need it most. Thank You!!!

  13. RALPH FULTON says

I was very pleased to see that you were not increasing the $10 per additional line charge to $15 for me. I was so happy with my plan. 1500 minutes was much more than I needed. In addition 200mb was just more than I needed. If you had increased the per line charge (I have 3 lines on my plan) I would be paying $13 more per month (with the 30% charge for taxes and fees that we pay in my area) with no benefit to me.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We’re glad to hear that our new plans will be a good fit for your needs, Ralph! Thank you for posting today!

  14. Linda Denmark says

As soon as my second IPhone 6 arrives, I will have it activated this week. Do I need to set up a second Apple ID for this phone so that my spouses contacts, photos, etc. are in his own account? Both phones will be on the same account, since I added this line to my account. Also, when asked do I enter the last 4 digits of his ss# or mine?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Linda! You will want to have two separate Apple ID’s, one for each phone. This will allow your spouse to add their contacts, photos and other information to their phone. As far as your Consumer Cellular account is concerned, both phones will be listed as separate lines. If you give us a call and you’re asked to verify that information, it will correspond to the main account holder. If you would like to adjust any of the information listed on your account, please feel free to call us at 888-345-5509. We will be happy to assist you! Thank you for posting today, and we hope your spouse enjoys their new phone!

  15. Susan Valentine says

We just joined CC, but did not have our AARP card with us when we signed up at the Target store. Is there any way to add it now to take advantage of the discount?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

You can add that information at any time, Susan. Just give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we will be happy to assist you. That way, you’ll start seeing those monthly savings add up!

Thank you for reaching out to us about this, Ken. First, please turn your phone off, then open the back of your phone and make sure that your SIM card is fully in place, then power your phone back on again. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, we’re happy to look at the coverage in your area and troubleshoot as needed. We may need to send some updates to your phone. So I was wondering how much an iphone 8 plus cost a month and how much it was gonna be upfront, and how much I need to pay and plus the plan every month.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Beatriz, thank you for posting. The Apple iPhone 8 Plus starts at $100 plus tax up-front with 24 payments $25 a month for the 64GB model. 38. Jeni Demarco says

Hi. We just switched from Verizon to CC at great savings to us – thank you! What I need to know is, do we need to contact Verizon to cancel, or do they find out through the transfer process? Thanks.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, Jeni. When a transfer has fully completed, that is communicated automatically through the system with the previous provider so they know to stop billing and cancel the line that has been moved to a new provider. If you are both receiving and making calls with Consumer Cellular service, your service with Verizon would be cancelled. Verizon is one of those providers who will typically cancel the service in their system automatically, but we recommend verifying this with them so there are no surprises.

  39. Specter says

I’m thinking about switching to consumer cellular, but I have a sort of unusual situation with my current phone: I want to keep my number that I have with my current provider, AT&T. But I also want to bring my own phone, which is an unlocked Samsung S5. Will the phone be compatible, and can I still keep my number? Thank you in advance!

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for posting, Specter. We have many customers who find themselves in this situation, and we’re here to make the process simple and easy! You can transfer your phone number to our service when you sign up, and most fully unlocked GSM smartphones, such as those used before with AT&T, can be used with our service as well! You’ll just need one of our SIM cards, and you can learn more about that here. We appreciate you posting, and we hope to see you as a customer soon!

  40. Peggy S Smith says

In order to switch from my current carrier to CC and I already own my own phone and want to keep my current number – can I go to one of your stores and have them set up my phone with the required SIM card to switch over to you?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We’ll be happy to help you switch, Peggy! You’ll want to make sure that your phone has been fully unlocked by your previous carrier, and then you can visit your local Target or Best Buy store to pick up our SIM card. It’s easy to activate, and we’ll be there to help you transfer your current phone number. If you have any questions, just give us a call at 888-345-5509. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about us, and we hope to see you as a customer soon!

  41. KERRY BOYD says

DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MAJOR CREDIT CARD … OR ANY TYPE OF CREDIT CARD …TO APPLY FOR A CONSUMER CELLULAR PHONE PLAN?

    • Hi Kerry, that is a great question, thanks for posting! You do need a valid debit or credit card in order to sign up for service. If you would like, an option would be to pick up a prepaid card that can be used to pay the bill or purchase phones with to have on the account.

  42. Kayla says

I was wondering if you will be selling the other colors of the iPhone XR such as the yellow one pretty soon?

    • Hi Kayla, that is a great question, thanks for posting! At this time, we do not have a timeline for when or if Apple will send us the other colors they offer that phone model in. You can purchase an unlocked model from Apple though to use with our SIM card if they have a color you would prefer to have.

  43. Ruby says

Hi I was wondering if I could just purchase a phone form your website? I’m not trying to get a plan yet just the phone for my young daughter.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the question, Ruby! Since we are a cellular service provider, we do not sell our phones without service. If you’re interested in purchasing a phone, you would also need to set up service with us.

  44. Haile says

I am 20 but my phone company sucks! I always see CC ads on TV and I wanted to know if there was a certain age limit to this amazing deal!

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Haile, the only age limit with our service is that you need to be at least 18 years or older to sign up for our service.

      • Christopher D Sigmon says

Im 43 do i qualify or you have to be older

        • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Christopher, the only age requirement that we have with our service is that the account holder must be at least 18 years or older.

  45. Robert Kauffman says

My wife is afraid she will loose all her pictures on her phone when we switch. We have IPhone 7 S plus with Verizon . What if any things on are phones will we loose ? PS we already have your SIM cards, just need reassurance.

  46. Dontae. N says

Hi, I am researching possible new carriers that are within my financial means. I came across CC and I’m very interested in the application process. I’m applying online and see the phone I desire is available via EasyPay for $10 due at checkout. I have entered all my CC info, yet skeptical if the Amount Due Today will change or if not approved for EasyPay Will i loose out on my money spent? I guess my question is this, once I hit “checkout” will my card be charged at that moment or after the credit check is completed?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a great question, Dontae! Eligibility for the EasyPay program would be determined after you click “Checkout” as the industry-standard credit check as to be processed first. If you are not approved for EasyPay, then our system would alert you before the payment is processed so that you can either choose to purchase the phone in full or select a different device. If you’re approved, then the order process will continue with the cost shown.

  47. pari says

I want to get the iPhone 11 but pay monthly for it, but how much is it total upfront for 64gb and $35 monthly. I would like to know so I have the correct amount of money I need to put it on a card.

    • Hi Pari, thanks for your question. The upfront payment is $35 plus the taxes for the full cost of her phone. We don’t have the taxes as they vary depending on your exact location. You can start the order process to get an idea of what taxes will be, or you can also give us a call at 800-686-4460 and we’d be happy to help with the order.

  48. S Bogli says

Why don’t you open Target stores for phone service in South Carolina Lets Go

    • Hi S, thanks for your post. We don’t know when our retail partners will open their cellular option for their stores and we don’t have an option to expedite it. If you do have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to give us a call at 800-686-4460, or you can also chat with one of our live agents here for further assistance.

  49. Thomas Hertwig says

I’m told by a Consumer Cellular rep at Target in Baton Rouge that I need to call CC to order a CC SIM card to give to the Target rep so they can convert my AT&T phone to CC service. I have not been able to get through to a human on the CC support phone number 888.345.5509 or on the support chat line. Please tell me by e-mail how to proceed. Thank you.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Thomas, if your local Target store doesn’t have our SIM cards in stock for purchase, then you can place an order on our website here.

  50. Jennifer Cox says

I want to reactivate my phone. The imei is 359516091410292. I don’t have the box with the activation code. My other phone has stopped working so I don’t have access to email or a phone.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Jennifer, we’d love to help you with that. In order to reconnect your account, we’ll need to speak with you directly. You can call us at 888-345-5509.

  51. John says

Looking at getting a phone from CC how do I guarantee that I will get a ATT sim as it has the best coverage at mine and my daughters house

    • Hi John, thanks for your interest! The best way to do this would be to mention it to one of our agents, if you’re signing up with us over the phone. Otherwise, once an order is placed, contact us and we can check to make sure you have that SIM card installed for the device and change it if needed.

  52. Sylvia says

Do you do a Credit Check in order to get your services?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a great question, Sylvia. We do process an industry-standard credit check when signing up.

  53. Don Olson says

Hi– I plan to bring an unlocked smart phone (my first smart phone) to the Target store here in Ventura County, CA, and sign up for CC. Trying to avoid bloatware because I am not at all interested in games. I read somewhere that AT&T doesn’t allow calling over Wi-Fi. Is that still true? Is there an advantage to calling over Wi-Fi when the Wi-Fi signal is available? Thanks for taking my questions…

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a great question, Don. We use both AT&T and T-Mobile, and Wi-Fi calling is available on both networks, but some models may not be compatible with the service on AT&T. If that happens, we can switch you to T-Mobile to see if it will work on that network instead. One of the benefits of Wi-Fi calling is it allows you to make calls while connected to Wi-Fi if you have a poor signal in your area.

  54. traildog says

As a potential new customer, if I order a new plan and phone, how long would it take to receive the phone and have it activated for use.

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a great question. Standard shipping is 3-5 business days, but express shipping is available for $10 with 1-2 business day delivery. If you’re getting a new number, the phone will be sent active and ready to go.

  55. traildog says

Is there a benefit to pay for a new phone upfront rather than monthly.
And- will a new S10e accept a micro storage card from an S5?

    • Hi Traildog, thanks for your question. The main benefit would be not having to pay for the phone along with the phone bill. The Samsung S10 should accept that memory SD card to move that information to the new phone.

  56. Verlinda Colbeck says

I can’t get into my voice mail. Any number I try it tells me it’s not the correct password. I’m very frustrated..

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

That’s definitely frustrating, Verlinda. You can reset your voicemail password through our automated system by calling 888-345-5509. You’ll just need to say “Other Options”, and then “I forgot my voicemail password”.

  57. J.E. Wall says

I have an iPhone 6s, and AT&T service. I am interested in Consumer Cellular. How do I determine whether my phone is locked or unlocked? If locked, how do I get it unlocked?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

You’ll need to contact AT&T, J.E. They should be able to tell you the lock status of the phone, and unlock it for you within their terms.

  58. Yasmin says

Hi! I just purchased a new phone and phone plan. I received and email saying my order needs to be reviewed so I can get my shipment as soon as possible. I don’t know what that means . Will I get my order!? Thanks!

    • Hi Yasmin, thanks for your question! You will still get your order, however, before we release it to get filled and shipped out, our billing department needs to speak with you so that we can confirm your information with you.

  59. Lori J Jones says

Do you have to be an AARP member to have a consumer cellular phone

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Lori. You aren’t required to have an AARP membership to join our service.

  60. mark says

Considering moving from another carrier to CC, but will need GSM phones. Selection page shows One 5g ACE for $275, Moto G Power for $150 and ZTE Wireless home base for $50 (yes, I want all three). Put them in cart and when I try to check out, the prices are $349, $179 and $79. If there is no shipping, no activation fee and no sim card fee, then what is the $132 increase for?

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Mark, we did have a price change recently but it sounds like your browser may be reflecting old information. I recommend clearing your web browser’s cache and cookies.

  61. Ed says

I currently have an iPhone 8 and 8s with Verizon. Can these be used on the CC network by just changing the SIM card?

    • Hi Ed, thanks for your questions. If the phones are unlocked, are GSM-compatible, and VoLTE capable, it may work on our network. We can’t guarantee compatibility for all models, but we have had good experiences in the past with iPhones switching over to our network as long as the mentioned criteria is met.

  62. Sherrill Cook says

which credit bureau do you check when person applies. I have freezes on my credit so would like to know which one I would have to make available and for how long.

  63. Kristyn says

If switching when would the first payment be due at.. beside the payment at checkout.. we are concerning on switching

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Kristyn, since we bill a month behind you wouldn’t receive a bill until 30 days after you start service. The due date is usually about 19 days after the billing cycle ends.

  64. Nathan Hester says

  66. Destini says

Curious what the credit score requirements are? I’m currently working on building my credit back up, but would love to have a nicer new phone!

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Destini, thank you for the interest. While the credit check is used to determine payment options available, we don’t see the number to be able to provide specifics and we don’t deny service based on their results. In general, if you have a good credit score you should be approved for EasyPay financing if that’s what you’re interested in.

  67. Stan Underwood says

I’m trying to get away from Verizon – and to keep my number. They refuse. ALSO I have a cell phone with AT&T and want to leave them too. I’m age 75 now and I’m no longer running a couple of businesses. Retired, all I need is a basic flip-phone which I bought off eBay last week. I’m in rural Georgia and would prefer to avoid a long drive to the nearest Target store. Cay you help?
PS: I have a great credit score.

    • Hi Stan, thanks for your interest in our service! We’d be happy to help with getting you switched over though and going over your questions to see if the phone you have could be compatible with our service. Give us a call at 800-686-4460 and we’d be happy to follow up with you!

  68. Sara says

Hi im a potential consumer cellular customer I will be turning 18 in a week and wondered if I will be eligible for the credit check for easypay then since this would be my first serious payment.

    • Hi Sara, thanks for your interest in our service! As long as you’re 18 years or older, you can sign up for service and all of our new customers will have the credit check run. The system will then let you know if the account is eligible or if we will need to establish a good payment history with you before we can reevaluate.

  69. D says

When I tried to sign up and buy a phone, the order wouldn’t go through because it requested a security freeze PIN number. It doesn’t say a PIN number to what exactly; credit bureau? bank account? what??? I tried all of my standard PINs and none of them worked. I’ve never encountered anything like this before and I can’t find any explanation of what PIN is being referred to on your website.

    • Hi D, thanks for your question. If you have a lock on your credit, in this case, one that is associated with Equifax, then you’ll need to get a PIN from them so that we have permission to run a credit check as part of the signing up process.
