Social Media—Another Way to Keep in Touch

Social media has become one of my favorite new ways to stay in touch. It’s a great outlet for catching up with old friends and sharing important moments with my family. Plus, it’s so convenient! Most social media sites have an app you can use on your cellphone, making them easy, immediate ways to share news, photos, videos—everything you need to stay informed.

Here are three popular social networking services that I use frequently. Whether you’re looking for a place to share beautiful new photos of your grandkids or keep up to date on the latest news headlines, you’ll find something interesting here to keep you busy.

Facebook

The most popular social network site in the world right now is Facebook. It reminds me of an online yearbook that’s always being updated, and is a great place to find and communicate with friends old and new. For instance, I now stay in touch with dozens of my friends from high school, many of whom I hadn’t heard from in years! Facebook lets you provide a window into your world by posting “status updates” or sharing links to other things you find interesting with friends you’ve chosen to connect with. Facebook also makes it really easy to upload and share photos and videos, so it’s a great place to show, and see, what your kids or grandkids are up to.

Twitter

With over 300 million users, Twitter has become the go-to for following breaking news stories and sharing opinions. It’s also a great option for passing along stories, blogs, or events in real time. Twitter works like a chat room or message board—you enter quick, short messages (“tweets”) with a 144 character limit, along with photos or videos, or links to other websites and articles. You can “re-tweet” (share) messages from other users, and find out what topics are “trending”, meaning generating discussion, around the world at any time.

Google+

Most Android devices come with Google+ already installed. If you’ve setup a Google account, or Gmail, you’re already connected. It functions a lot like Facebook—you connect with groups of friends (called “Circles”) to share specific content that you find interesting. It’s a great way to get started to see if you enjoy using social media—if you’re already familiar with the look, feel, and functionality of Google’s many products, using Google+ is a really comfortable experience.

These are some of the most popular and widely used social media outlets, but there are many more, which I’ll be touching on in future posts. Just remember, whichever one you use, Consumer Cellular is also there! “Like” us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and add us to your circle on Google+. Social media is the best place to stay in touch for information on our contests, prizes, or upcoming events, plus it’s a great place to get customer support or ask questions. Be sure to connect with us!

If I switch from my Tracfone to Consumer Cellular can I keep my number?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Absolutely, Barbara. We can port your number from your previous carrier for you when you sign up. Just be sure to keep your Tracfone account open until the transfer is complete. It can take up to 24-48 hours, but is often even faster. We’re happy to help you get started at 888-345-5509 whenever you are ready. Thank you for taking the time to post, and we hope to see you as a Consumer Cellular customer soon!

Since the trees have so many leaves on them My phone will not have data on it. Do you have a booster I can put in the house or anything that will help. Thanks I have your LG smart phone

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, Caroline. We don’t have a booster available, but we are happy to troubleshoot your phone and see if we can help you with the data issue. There are some updates and changes we can make that may help. Can you give us a call at 888-345-5509? If possible, please call from a different phone so that you can turn your LG smartphone off and restart it if needed. We appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us, and we hope you have a wonderful day!

  3. Alexis says

What does data refer to? Is it when I’m reading a Facebook entry, writing/answering an email, looking at photos someone sent, playing a game, or something else? Thanks.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Alexis! Your phone will use data from your Connect plan anytime you view a webpage, check an email or go on Facebook. We even have a blog here that will tell you the estimated amount of data used by many smartphone features. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi when you are enjoying a game or posting to Facebook, you won’t use any data from your plan. That’s why it’s a good idea to always leave Wi-Fi on, so you can save money. If you have any other questions about using data or Wi-Fi with your phone, we’re happy to answer them at 888-345-5509. Thank you for taking the time to post today!

Great news, Mary J! Switching from AT&T to Consumer Cellular is quite simple! You can keep your current phone number, and likely even keep the same phone. If you’re ready to get started, please give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we can begin transferring your number. Just be sure to keep your old account open until the process is complete. You can also visit a Target or Sears store, or get started on our website here if you like. Just pick the option that is most convenient for you! I received a notice that I had exceeded my data usage and had been automatically upgraded. My problem is in navigating your web page, I can’t find a comparison between what I had and exceeded and what my new plan is. When I try to display your account choices you keep switching me to my account. How may i view all your available plans?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We do apologize for the confusion, Patt. You can easily view our plans from within the My Account page. Once you’ve logged in, click on the Change Plan button in the Plans & Usage section. From there, you’ll see the current plan you have, as well as our other plans and the monthly price for each. You’ll also be able to make any plan changes from there as well. With our Automatic Upgrades, we’re always looking to give you the best value for your usage, so you’ll never pay for more than you need. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about our plans or other features at 888-345-5509. Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us, and we hope you have a wonderful day!

  6. Russell Shoemaker says

I have an LG phone now. Can I use the same phone with Consumer Cellular?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Russell! In general, unlocked GSM phones work well with our SIM cards. The phone will need to be unlocked by the previous carrier, as unfortunately, we can’t do that on our end. While we can’t guarantee that every phone will work with our service, it’s free to try our SIM card. We’ll give you a $10 credit on your first month’s invoice! You can find our SIM card at your local Target or Sears store, on our website here, or we can help you order one over the phone at 888-345-5509. We’re so glad to hear that you’re interested in our service, and we look forward to welcoming you to Consumer Cellular!

Has Consumer Cellular discontinued their newsletter and blog. Haven’t seen either for Feb. and it’s already Feb. 12th. We enjoyed reading them and hope they are still going to be available.

    • Hi Rose, thanks for your question! We are continuing our newsletter and it should be going out to anyone who is signed up for it. You can double-check to make sure that your email is listed for it by going to your online account or by giving us a call at 800-686-4460. Otherwise, you can view it at any time by visiting our website here.
