Reading Apps are the Next Chapter for Book Lovers

Since you’re already using your cellphone to read email, social media posts, and even the news, why not consider using it to spend time with a good book? Like almost every other form of media, books have gone digital, and there are many popular reading apps available to help you connect with fellow book-lovers, or even use your phone as a personal library. I’m listing a few of my favorites here, each of which is free to download for either iPhone or Android smartphones.

Litsy is a book-focused social network that lets you share old favorites, and discover new ones. You can rate and review books, and follow authors and publishers to get the latest news. It’s also an incredible tool for keeping track of all the books you’ve read, as well as the ones you want to read.

Another fun option is the Goodreads app, which bills itself as “the largest reading community in the world.” It offers unique benefits like the opportunity to join book clubs and participate in reading challenges, plus if you’re a Kindle user, you can sync the app to your device to track your reading, and get personalized recommendations based on books in your library.

Your phone provides a great platform for enjoying audio books—I love to listen to books while I’m driving, for instance. LibriVox provides access to over 24,000 free audio books and other programs, like old time radio dramas. For a selection of more contemporary titles, try a one month free membership with Audible, which offers 180,000 audiobooks, podcasts, and other original material to choose from. After 30 days, you can subscribe to continue to purchase items to listen to. One tip for using either of these apps: download audio books while connected to Wi-Fi, so they can be enjoyed at your convenience without using any cellular data.

Connect with a great book today! By using the e-books and audio book apps listed here, you’re able to attend book club night from the comfort of your favorite chair at home, or listen to an audiobook come to life while you’re in the driver’s seat on a long road trip.

Thank you for posting, Harold. I took a look at your account, and I see that you’re using an Android smartphone. We recommend installing the Android Device Manager app, which will help you locate your phone if it is ever lost. You’ll be able to use a tablet or computer to login to your Google account, then locate your device on a map. Read our blog here for more information about how this works. That way, you’ll rest easy knowing you can find your phone if you need to. If we can help you with any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call us at 888-345-5509. If I use my phone in my car to listen to songs thru Bluetooth will I be charged minutes for doing this?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Jane! If you’re using the Bluetooth system to listen to songs that you’ve downloaded to your phone, you won’t be using any minutes or data from your plan. If you’re using an app that streams music via a data connection, you will be using some data from your plan. If you have any other questions about the features on your device or about your service, we’re happy to answer them at 888-345-5509. Thanks for posting today!

If I have a disconnected phone can I add the Consumer Cellular?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Allalivis! We have many customers who use our SIM card with a device they used previously. For your phone to work with our service, it will need to be fully unlocked by the original carrier and use GSM technology. Devices used previously with AT&T or T-Mobile would fall into this category. To get started, you’ll need one of our SIM cards, which you can find on our website or at a local Target store. We’re also happy to help you over the phone at 888-345-5509 if that is more convenient. You can learn more about how our SIM cards work here with a short video. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions or if you’re ready to get started. We appreciate you taking the time to post, and we hope you have a great day!

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for asking, Brenda. Depending on the game or the app, it may require access to the internet. If you’re worried about using data from your plan unknowingly, you can make sure that you’re connected to Wi-Fi before you play. We’re happy to answer any other questions you may have at 888-345-5509, so please don’t hesitate to call us at your convenience. We appreciate you posting, and we hope you have a wonderful day!

  5. Connie Thompson says

My husband listens to Sirius Radio Station. Are we being billed for internet service when he listens daily. We have to pay them for listening, so I need to know if you have charges as well.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for asking, Connie. If you’re streaming content via an app, you’re most likely using data from your plan. If you are connected to Wi-Fi, your phone will use that connection instead, so we recommend using Wi-Fi whenever you can. We’re happy to answer any other questions you may have at 888-345-5509. We appreciate you posting!

When I’m on Facebook, am I being charged for using the internet? I’m confused, please help me.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We’re always happy to help, Connie, so feel free to post any questions you may have! Using the Facebook app on your phone does require internet access, so you’ll use data from your plan if you aren’t connected to Wi-Fi. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you can use the app all you want without using data from your plan. Thanks for asking!

I lost cell service yesterday at the beginning of the Nor’easter here on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Also lost internet so I had no way to contact you. We are still without any cell service. When will this be restored?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for reaching out to us, Catherine. I was able to review your account, and I see that our Facebook team has been working with you regarding this outage. It looks like service should be restored within 24 hours, so we recommend power cycling your phone periodically to see if your connection has been repaired. If we can assist you with anything else at this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us once again. Thanks again for posting!

  8. Luanna Kitchener says

Is there anyway to get a list of phone numbers of incoming and outgoing calls and texts on the lines on my account?

    • That is a great question, Luanna. You can view your incoming and outgoing usage by logging into your account on our website. From there, you can view your usage or access a copy of your previous invoices which also include usage details. If we can help you further, please give us a call at 888-345-5509 at your convenience.
