Rate Plan Upgrades Include More Data, Lower Prices

For the second time this year—and the tenth time in recent years—we’re providing more usage for your money! Beginning this month, you’ll notice some terrific changes to our monthly Talk and Connect plans, offering you both simpler choices and greater access to minutes, texts, and data.

You can view all of our new rate plans here. The latest enhancements include:

  • Talk plans now offer either a starter plan at just $15 per month for 250 minutes, or unlimited minutes for $20 per month.
  • Nearly all Connect plans have more data for the same low price—and our largest plan has been doubled from 5GB to 10GB per month!
  • All Connect plans now include unlimited texting.

For our current customers, there’s absolutely no action required on your part. If applicable, your cellphone plan has been automatically adjusted to the new structure. This means you’ll have access to more minutes, texts, and data at the same price, or less, than what you were paying before.

And remember, if you feel you’d like a plan that’s larger (or smaller), with Consumer Cellular there’s never a fee to change your plan. To make your savings go even further, you can even add a line to your account for only $15 a month, and share all the talk, text, and data on your monthly plan with family or friends.

      They also increased the minimum service plan price for minutes without notice and priced me out of it, a violation of the AARP endorsement requirements in my opinion. I have no use for data plans. Should be interesting to see if this real customer feedback is posted in what looks like a fake thread.

    I have never thought of changing from CC. All my friends say they got unlimited minutes, unlimited text. But I stayed with MY CC. Now I have what they have, except for one thing. The HIGH price. Love my CC.

        I was with cc. But I didn’t get any feedback on previous comments on getting more data. I switched to another carrier with an unlimited data plan. If I tether to my laptop speeds reduce at 15 gb. Otherwise it slows at 22 gb. If I want to stream videos those aren’t included in those data totals. They add on to the unlimited total. So $40/10 gb versus $90/15gb, 22gb, plus unlimited streaming. For Consumer Cellular, you get what you pay for. I was data starved for so long I used nearly 50gb my first month and the slower speed still seemed faster than Consumer Cellular. You still don’t get 4G LTE with Consumer Cellular either.

    I do have a question. When hurricane was approaching FL last month I bumped up my data for a few days, and then returned to my normal data. Do I get charged the extra for the whole month?

    I received the email concerning the updates to the plans. Unlimited phone for same rate as the previous 1500 minutes – nice but I don’t need more than 1500 minutes. The lowest level connect plan went from a monthly cost of $2.50 for 30MB to $5.00 for 250MB – again something that I don’t need, I only need texting capability. Monthly additional line fee went from $10/month to $15/month. So I’m paying $7.50 more per month and not really receiving any benefit from it. Am I understanding this correctly?

      I don’t know why Consumer cellular won’t answer your question? The answer is it will stay $10.00 until you make any changes to your account, or you go over and it is automatically bummed to the next level by Consumer then it goes to $15.00.

          I guess that is what happened to me, $5 extra a month each for 2 additional lines. I know I went over on data and got bumped up, but didn’t know I’d get penalized forever because of it. That isn’t exactly the same price, still a good value but shady practices like this is what made me leave other carriers.

    Got email yesterday about upgrades. Have two cells phone & just got wireless home base phone.
    In email saying “We’ve lowered the price for unlimited calling, and doubled the data available on our largest plan, with no increase in price.“
    In above / blog “you feel you’d like a plan that’s larger (or smaller), with Consumer Cellular there’s never a fee to change your plan.”
    Unknown of what monthly billing with new phone line will be until new invoice bill cycles comes through in October, November & December.
    How long of a time period (dates or days) that Consumer Cellular saying does one have to change this upgrade free of charge?

    If I understand this correctly, per line charges have gone up by $5 a month (10 to 15). Anyone with 2 lines and 3GB data plan would see no difference and anyone with more than 2 lines will actually have their total bill increased, correct?

      I’m unhappy, too, that the data increases were announced, while at the same time the $5 increase went unheralded. For me the data increase wasn’t necessary, and I was looking forward to a less expensive ‘lighter usage’ plan. I was surprised to see the increase in my October bill, otherwise I’m happy with CC, and this is the only slip-up I’ve seen in four years (high marks for customer service, as well).

Our phone line is only the old 2 line wired no coaxial in the area and satellite is very limited and we cannot connect to that either. However a small increase would be nice and show you appreciate us. Also 300 minutes is becoming the standard for no contact phones with other carriers.

    CC worked great–for awhile. my new home base did not work —ever. CC knew at once. I got many solutions, none were correct. My home phone line is the one given to our Dr’s, Pastor and other important contacts. I spent 15 to 20 hours speaking with most of to reps at CC. Since the unit never worked and is a lifeline not just good to have I requested a new one to be over nited, as truly responsible company would do. It took 4 4! days to get out of the warehouse and will be 5 to 6 in transit. By then I will have been without my primary line 15 to 16 days and was billed for 10 days of dead line maybe since corrected. If you call pack a picnic lunch and go the bathroom before, because you will be on the phone a looong time. If it something out of the ordinary, no one knows what to do, and no management/ admin types around to resolve an unusual situation. I am probably done with CC. All that and I get to pay $10 a month more. I would be glad to hear from someone in authority but don’t expect to nor do I expect to see this on the blog

    Please clarify the pricing. Is the $15 per line charge applicable for existing accounts? I have 3 lines and adding $10/month to my base charges would definitely cancel out any good feelings brought on by plan enhancements for talk and data. And, if I am indeed facing this price increase without changing my account characteristics, shame on you for telling an incomplete story in your release about prices. I tried calling to inquire, but fell for the “we’ll call you back and you won’t lose your place in line” on a 15-minute wait. It’s now been over 40 minutes without that promised call back.

    Come on people… understand what’s going on with these plan changes. Since the cost for added lines is increasing by 50% ($5.00 per month), those who have “shared” plans (more than one line associated with their account) are subsidizing the “free” upgrades for those who have just 1 line. I just got off the phone with CC and the word is that all current accounts are “grandfathered” and the new line fee increase will not be triggered until a “change” is made. So, if you go over your current grandfathered plan limits by even 1 minute or 1 MB, the new line fees kick in each month thereafter and you lose your “grandfather” status. Even if you switch back to your original plan limits, the new line fees remain permanent. Free is never “Free”. Someone always pays.

    Having a problem seeing that the question about the price increase of adding lines is never answered here on this forum. We want to see the answer here, not call. Most of what you did was great, but just answer the question. Some customers bill can go up. The truth may not be good, but, it is always better stating it. I still think CC is our best plan. and the best plan out there.

    For those of us grandfathered in the old plans. I spoke to a supervisor named Mike and he stated that changing data plans WILL NOT affect your additional line charge, so a lot of customer support folks are misinformed. I had two of them tell me that if I went over my data allocation that I would be switched to the $15 per line fee for my 3 additional lines, but that is not the case. Changing data plans does NOT affect your additional line fee, the line fee will only change if you go to the 250 minute plan and then back to unlimited minutes plan. I have already changed my data plan twice since the new changes and my additional line fee stayed the same. I realize this is a new plan and people are still learning about it, but hopefully CC will reach out to customers that were given the incorrect information, you are losing a lot of goodwill with the incorrect information that is being given out by customer service.

    I’m wondering why your rates have gone up so much and your fees as well? We use to pay $25 and about $3 in fees. Then we added my daughter and it was about $45 because she used data more than us. Now we are paying $68. Minutes have gone from 450 to 250 forcing us to unlimited plan, additional lines have gone up from $10 to $15 a line, and fees are up to $14?

    I have a major issue with the 50% additional line increase from $10 to $15. Here’s why. Consumer Cellular did not notify me that if or when I changed (increased) my rate plan that my additional lines fees would also increase. This is deceptive and dishonest on Consumer Cellular’s part. When talking to customer service, they indicated they were in the process of notifying customers of the increase. Well, I’m sorry but that notification must come before it takes effect, not afterwards. I am disputing the increased fees on the grounds I was not notified and awaiting a call back from the billing department.

    First of all, I would like to give thanks for the extra data received on our plan (as you know, that’s probably the most used and valued feature of smart phone plans – it would be refreshing to hear industry sales people acknowledge that fact to customers – Consumer Reports has). Also, unlimited texting, though not as much used by us as data, is also an appreciated upgrade. However, in reading the above thread, I sense evasive reticence on the part of associates to acknowledge the $5.00 increase for a second line when a new plan has been implemented; that fact should be in the e-mails I’ve received or at least detailed in the explanation of the plans on the website – it makes CC look a little shady like the bulk of other carriers by not owning up to that information up front. Just a small, personal observation; Consumer Cellular is still the best provider around, even if I had to dig around this thread a little until I found the upfront explanation of how the $5.00 increase is being implemented. Now the wiser, I will be more careful not to go over on our data package so as to trigger an automatic upgrade that will include the 50% second-line increase. Regardless, thanks for the best cellular service around!

    I was all set to return to Consumer Cellular now that they have a 10GB data plan. I had left because the 5GB plan, split four ways, was a couple of GB short of our needs.

    Then I noticed that Consumer Cellular increased the cost for each additional line by a whopping 50%! That was a deal-breaker.

    Today came my second bill after the rate change. I’m absolutely happy. Unlimited calling means a lot, as for the data, I still keep it off until needed, and so far it is satisfactory, And the bill is “budget friendly”

    Consumer Cellular used to be great for its flexibility, but the new fee structure has put existing, loyal customers in a box. Especially families with multiple lines. Stray one time from what you had and you get hit with massive price increases. I went over my 250 monthly minutes one time (by 13 minutes) and this new pricing structure automatically penalized me by increasing the cost for my additional three lines by 50% each per month ($180 hit per year). The beauty of Consumer Cellular service used to be that I could affordably adjust plans as needed, but that is no longer the case without a drastic price increase for customers grandfathered in to the prior rates. By being put into the unlimited plan, it actually costs me $20 more per month because of my three additional lines and the additional $5 per month fee. This is totally deceptive and not true to what this brand used to be. This company is fine if you purchase one line but for customers or families with more than one line it’s not such a great deal anymore. Sad but true. Instead of valuing loyal customers who have multiple lines Consumer Cellular penalizes us. This rate change is not a great deal for everyone.

        Thank you for agreeing that you have put loyal, existing customers in a price box. It is not comforting knowing that one small overage in minutes used will trigger a huge percentage price hike for me. This is not the Consumer Cellular I once knew. Please stop saying that we customers get more for less with this rate adjustment. That is far from the case. Your brand has totally changed and that is disappointing. You are now the same as all the other carriers who ding customers with fees and outrageous prices.

    First I want to say, I really like that you have a blog for customer service. I’m a new customer and just learning about C.C. And so far I’m liking it. I have 2 comments that concern me;
    First, when I signed up, I was not able to find my AARP # so I did not get the discount. Now I can’t find how or where to apply it. My # is good till 12/18, but I always renew. Can you add it or tell me how?
    Second, when my bill post an amount does it include all charges like tax, etc.?
    Oh one more, I use a lot of data because I do t have Wi-Fi where I live. Others around me do but I live in a rural area. Is there a way I can reduce phone data and be able to use my P.C. for internet? As it is, I only use my phone. There is WiFi available about a block away but I am out of range .
    Last, I want to commend you for the blog, I sat on hold via phone for more than an hour when signing up. This is not as immediate but I can see you do a very good job of replying to our questions. I want to thank you in advance for your response.

Just give us a call, and we’ll be happy to make sure that you’re getting your exclusive monthly discount. Next, the total listed as your amount due in My Account or on your invoice will include your taxes and any other charges.

      As for your data usage, we recommend doing a few things to minimize the amount you’re using. If another Wi-Fi source isn’t available, you can start my turning off your location services when not in use, and update your settings so that apps are not automatically updating.     Looking at my bill, I cannot determine how many of the 3GB of data I have used. Where is that reflected on my bill? I see something labelled Free Wireless Web Megabytes of which it shows 1116. Does that mean 1.16GB of data used?

    • Hi Tony, thanks for your question. We’d be happy to review your usage for your previous cycle with you. Keep in mind, there is 1,000 megabytes to 1 gigabyte, so if you were on the 500MB plan, going over that amount would cause it to upgrade to the next plan up to the 3GB plan.
