Free SIM Cards

By listening to what our customers want, we learn valuable lessons. They help us solve business problems, refine our solutions and meet consumer expectations. Case in point, some iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users told us they like our affordable cell phone plans and service-friendly reputation, but they wanted to keep their existing phone. Fair enough.

The catch? Their iPhones use a different SIM card design, what’s known as a Micro SIM card. As the name implies, the Micro SIM card is smaller than the SIM card used in most other cell phones, including Consumer Cellular phones.

Unfortunately, some creative customers tried to solve the problem on their own by simply trimming their regular Consumer Cellular SIM card, thinking they could re-size it to fit their iPhone.

This is not something you want to do or try. SIM cards are very delicate and can be destroyed easily. And since the information on a SIM card is what enables your phone to work with our service, you could be without service until you receive a replacement card.

Instead, we came up with a better idea: a Dual SIM card. This type of SIM card is a full-size card with a die-cut Micro SIM built in. In other words, it will fit your phone, regardless of whether you need a standard SIM card or a Micro SIM card. And it’s easy to use: Simply pop out the Micro SIM and insert it into your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Our free SIM cards are designed to work with any phone previously used with AT&T or any unlocked GSM phone. So if you want to use our service with a cell phone that isn’t in our lineup, give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we’ll send you a free SIM card. We’ll even pay for the shipping.

Once you receive your new SIM card, watch our brief video on inserting a Dual SIM card or our brief video on inserting a standard SIM card. It’s easy.

When it comes to keeping you on top of your cell phone needs, we don’t just listen—we respond. That’s why I encourage you to let us know if you have other ideas for improving our service. If it’s a good idea, I promise you it will be given serious consideration. I like to think our customers make our best advisors.

How about a 3000 minute plan added to the service choices?

    Check out this article: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/now-illegal-unlock-cellphone/story?id=18319518
It is now illegal to unlock your cell phone. Obviously the government did this at the request of their corporate puppeteers, such as AT&T. They don't even care if we call them corrupt any more.

I have an apple 4 iphone with verizon. Do you have a card that will work?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Jim. Thanks for the question. Cell phones from Verizon Wireless are not compatible with SIM card technology therefore, their phones won't work with our service. If you need any additional assistance, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490 or at [email protected]. Thank you.

  4. Sandy says

When will Consumer Cellular going to get a better phone? I love my Bravo but would like to make an upgrade to a much better phone and not leave Consumer Cellular. It always seems like CC phones are old and refurbished.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Sandy. Thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear that you love your Motorola Bravo – it's a great phone. We've released several Android smartphones since then including the Huawei 8800 which might be a good option for you. Here's a link to our cell phone lineup in case you're interested: https://www.consumercellular.com/shopping/choose/device. However, as the article indicated, you're not limited to the phones we have for sell. If you have a different phone that is compatible with SIM card technology, we can send you a FREE SIM card so you can use that phone with our cell phone service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490 or at [email protected]. Thank you.

i was wondering if you had a micro sim card for a Verizon 15.5,

        Model # MD656LL/A

please let me know asap thank you.

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Daniel. It looks like you have an iPhone. In general, unlocked GSM phones, such as those used previously with AT&T or T-Mobile, work best with our SIM card. The best way to know for sure if your iPhone will work with our service is to test it using our free SIM card. You can find one at your local Target store, here on our website or we can send one to you if you give us a call at 888-345-5509. We’re glad you took the time to post, and we look forward to assisting you soon!

Micro sim card works great. Be sure to contact Consumer Cellular if needed. They are able to tweak things at their end and improve the iPhone reception, etc. Am so very glad we switched to Consumer Cellular over a year ago.

  6. Missy says

Jim, any phone (and phone company) that uses CDMA technologly will not work with Consumer Cellular. A phone that uses GSM (like AT&T phones) should. Not positive, but I think used out-of-contract phones are still OK to unlock. Here is a chart to guide you.

i have a LG sprint phone.will the sim cardwork on this phone?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Raymond. Cell phones from Sprint are not compatible with SIM card technology therefore, their phones won't work with our service. If you need any additional assistance, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490 or at [email protected]. Thank you.

  8. Ester says

    How about iPads?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Good question, Ester. If your iPad accepts SIM cards, you can certainly put one of our SIM cards in there to test it out. However, I would d be very cautious with that. iPads (and other Tablets) typically use a lot more data than cell phones and smartphones do. So, I would not recommend using our SIM cards with a tablet too much as you may quickly use a lot of data. Thanks again for the question.

      • Alma Counihan says

Hi Dominic I have an I-pad G3 with a sim card slot for ATT. I already have an account with CC, can you send me a sim card? If so what will I have to do to activate it?
        Thanks,
        Alma

        • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Alma. You can move the SIM card out of your cell phone and move it into the iPad if you wish. Or, if you want a SIM card just for the iPad, you'll need to set up another line. We can help you do that. However, I'd be very cautious about proceeding with using our SIM cards in your iPad. iPads (and other Tablets) typically use a lot more data than cell phones and smartphones do. So, I wouldn't recommend using our SIM cards with a tablet too much as you may quickly use a lot of data. Thanks again for the question.

        • Carla says

Just wondering if Alma was able to get her ipad to work with CC and if so, how she did it.

          • Shirley Clark says

I’d like to know also, and I’d like to know HOW she did it! I can’t seem to do it.

          • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Shirley. We’ve had some customers use one of our SIM cards in their iPads, but we recommend being very cautious as it can use a great deal of data quickly. Your iPad must be SIM compatible for this option to work. If you have any questions, we’ll be happy to answer them at 888-345-5509. Thank you!

      • Angie says

How can an IPAD or tablet use more data than a cell phone?

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

We appreciate you taking the time to post, Angie. A tablet is often used to watch movies and download other large files, which would consume more data than most people use with a smartphone. It’s always a good idea to use Wi-Fi for both tablets and smartphones when you are able to do so. We’re happy to answer any questions about our SIM cards at 888-345-5509 if you like. Thank you again for posting, and we hope you have a great day!

I'm in Afghanistan , will you're service work for me here ?
I'm going to have my wife in the states get in touch with you..she is in dire need of a new service provider and phone.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Carl. Thanks for the question. Our cell phone service only works within the United States, so it won't work in Afghanistan. However, it'll work for your wife in the States. Feel free to have her contact us at 888-548-6490 or at [email protected] and we'll be more than happy to assist her. Thank you.

  10. Dorothy says

When will Consumer Cellular be coming out with a Windows OS cellphone? I really want to upgrade my cellphone, but I really want to upgrade to a Windows OS cellphone.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Dorothy. We don't have any plans to add a Windows cell phone to our lineup. However, if you obtain a Windows phone elsewhere, we can send you a free SIM card, so you can test it out with our service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490 or at [email protected]. Thank you.

  11. Carol says

Looks like I fall in the “Can't use phone” category. I have a Sanyo with Sprint Service. But can I still keep my number when transferring to your service?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Carol. Yes, as long your cell phone number is still active, we can transfer your number over to our cell phone service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  12. Teresa says

You say that Consumer Cellular only works in the US. Does it work in Canada? I live very close to B.C. and take trips up there. I would need my phone to work in Canada and/or make calls/text to Canada.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hello Teresa. Thanks for the questions. Our customers are free to dial (and text) Canadian numbers. However, our cell phone service will not work if you cross the border into Canada. Thank you.

      • Tucker says

Is this still true? I am in the same situation as Teresa and need service when in Canada. What are my options as a Consumer Cellular customer?

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, Tucker. We do still offer free SIM cards, but our service is meant to be used within the United States. While you may have a signal in certain parts of Canada, you may be connecting to international towers. This can result in costly international roaming charges. If you have a smartphone, there are many ways to stay in touch with just a Wi-Fi connection. Apps like Skype, Google Hangouts or iMessage are excellent options. We’re happy to talk with you about the options at 888-345-5509 at your convenience. We appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us today, and we hope to speak with you soon!

I'm so glad I found your blog, I was wondering about the mini sim cards for the iphones. I have an iphone 4 I just love and want to switch to your service as soon as AT&T is done with me =)

I bought my husband your iphone 3gs and he's using your service and loves the phone and the service!

    Thanks! Jan

  14. Terry says

I have my old iPhone 3 that I no longer use. I had my service with AT&T and I was wondering if I can give it to my mother for her to use through Consumer Cellular? She is with AARP and I know the SIM card in the iPhone 3 is larger then the iPhone 4 because I had the store to cut my SIM card to fit it. Will your SIM card fit in a iPhone 3?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Terry. Sounds like you've got a great idea there. We'll be able to send you a FREE SIM card that will fit in your iPhone 3 so you can use our affordable cell phone service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

    • Jonathan Tramill says

I have a Orbach phone through Verizon can we get me a SIM cards or unlock my phone

      • Hi Jonathan, thanks for your question. You would need to actually contact Verizon to have the phone unlocked from them. You can definitely order our SIM cards though, but you will also want to make sure that the phone is also GSM-compatible and VoLTE capable. We can’t guarantee compatibility for all models, but we’ll do all we can to see if we can get it connected for you.

  15. Corey says

I am wanting to purchase an Android dual Sim 4.1.9 OS smartphone. It is an unlocked phone which supports GSM (850,900,1800,1900)Mhz and WCDMA (2100Mhz)..but don't know if it was an ATT phone or not..Will my current Sim card in my Consumer Cellular cell work in this phone or will I have to order a dual Sim from Consumer Cellular? Also, if I have to order the dual sim from you guys , will I have the same phone # ?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Corey. Thanks for the question. If the cell phone you're talking about accepts a regular sized SIM card, the SIM card in your current Consumer Cellular phone will work just fine. However, if you need a Micro SIM card instead, we can send you a Dual SIM card. And we won't need to change your cell phone number in the process; you can keep the same number you've always had. If you need any additional assistance, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  16. Denise says

I am interested in keeping my AT&T # & changing over to Consumer Cellular. Can I use my iPhone 4 for phone service only ( I don't want to be bothered by Text Messages any longer). Can I still use the “Anywhere 150” plan with iPhone 4?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Denise. Thanks for the question. We don't force our customers to have text messaging and data plans just because they have a smartphone. If all you need is our Anywhere 150 plan for minutes, then that's fine with us! If you have any additional questions about our affordable cell phone service, please feel free to give us a ring at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  17. Glenda says

No question for you, just one big compliment for the “Out of this World” customer service your team gives. AAAAA+

  18. Diane M says

Will your service work with an unlocked iPhone 5?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Good question, Diane. The unique thing about the iPhone 5 is that it uses something called a “Nano SIM”, which is even smaller than the “Micro SIM” we talked about in this blog. We've heard that some people are physically cutting a Micro SIM down into the size of a Nano SIM but, I wouldn't recommend trying that. These cards are so small and it'll likely get destroyed in the process. At this time, we don't have any Nano SIM cards available. Thank you.

  19. Lucious Taylor Sr says

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Lucious. We can send you a SIM card for free if you're interested in testing our cell phone service out on your current phone. We'll likely need to change a few setting in order for texts and data to work properly. There's also no charge for having your number transferred over to Consumer Cellular. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact our customer service team at [email protected] or at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

      • Lynne says

Interested to see if Samsung Galaxy S4 GSM will work on your network.

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the question, Lynne. In general, you can use your own phone as long as it is an unlocked GSM phone. You can try it out by placing our free SIM card in your phone and calling us to get all of the features set up. Please feel free to contact us at 888-345-5509. Thank you!

  20. Gloretta says

I have a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus slider phone, unfortunately it is CDMA without a sim card. Do you plan to offer a phone in the future with a slide out keyboard? Texting is easier with that format.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Gloretta. We don't have any plans to offer a cell phone with a slide out keyboard. However, if you purchase one elsewhere, we can always send you a free SIM card so you can use the phone with our cell phone service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to give us a ring at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  23. Sandra Chavez says

We are extremely pleased with our Google Nexus phones purchased unlocked directly from the Google Store. Work flawlessly with Consumer Cellular service once we got our terminology correct about the sim card size (we use the microsom) and is a fabulous phone at a very reasonable price. CC service is great, thank you.

    • Rolf K says

Thank you Sandra; Can we assume that you mean the Google Nexus 4? If so, that is exactly the information I needed. Also, can you tell us which State you are in?
      Thanks.

  24. Jim Pamperin says

Does Consumer Cellular have Additional Included Services, such as:
Call forwarding, Call hold, Call waiting, Caller ID, Conference calling, Customer Care
Directory assistance, Voicemail with Message-Waiting Indicators

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Good question. In fact, many of those features come free with our affordable cell phone service. Directory assistance (411) is the only one on your list that isn't free however, there are free alternatives such as 800-FREE-411. Thanks Jim.

      • Sherri says

This is the information I”ve been looking for – thank goodness CC doesn”t use Free 411 – I cancelled a cell phone I had simply because they used one of these “free” services for number directory service and it was one of the most MADDENING things I”ve ever tried to use. I never, once, got an actual phone number from the thing, just one add after and another after another with “push 1 to purchase” after each advertizing.

I can imagine people easily mistaking that ”push 1” to mean they”ll get a phone number when actually what they”re getting is the privelege to buy something they don”t want. The thing just went around and around and was never able to understand the name of the place I was trying to call, which happened to be the hospital my husband was in and I needed to call him with my cell after leaving the phone number at home.

I got ads for antique shops, sandwich shops, products not from a shop, every kind of opportunity to buy something possible, when all I wanted was directions to the place where my husband was being treated for complications due to Parkinson”s.

Just charge me the dollar or dollar and a-half – that”s way more honest, more straightforward, and you actually get a phone number!

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Lashiva! If your Blu HD phone is the GSM version and it is unlocked, it sounds like it will be a good fit! We can’t guarantee that every feature will work with our SIM card, but we’re happy to try it! And, with our Risk-Free Guarantee, you can try our service without worry. You can find our SIM cards at your local Target or Sears store, on our website here, or you can order one over the phone at 888-345-5509. Just choose the option that works best for you! Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us!

I have been with you for well over 5 years and your service and service contacts are great. I am just sorry that you have chosen Sears as your in store option. Their stand on several issues that are important to me, have made them a store that I do not do business with anymore. But you have a great idea about us wanting to try something in our hands before buying, please continue your care of your Consumer Cellular users, it is great!!

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Norman. Thanks for the question. Cell phone batteries are rather durable so it's likely that you won't need a replacement battery. However, if at any time you need a new battery for your Doro cell phone, you may order one from us. We won't charge you for any shipping or handling fees. Thank you.

And, as long as your landline is currently active, we should be able to transfer the number over to our service. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

Can I use my Motorola Bravo in Europe if I replace the Sim card while visiting there?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Good question, Bill. Unfortunately, I don't have a definitive answer for you. Both our cell phones and our cell phone service are designed to work within the United States only. The only way to know with absolute certainty is to test it out once you get to Europe. Thank you.

  36. Richard says

Thanks for the question, Richard. I don't have any news to report on a possible Nano card option. However, I'll be sure to pass your comment on to our management team. Thanks again!

  37. Patricia says

The only problem I have with CC is that I cannot use it overseas. Do you know if there are any plans to have service available overseas anytime soon?
I visit friends in the UK, Italy & France for a month at a time & would love to be able to use my phone overseas.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Patricia. You're right, our cell phone service won't work overseas. We don't have any plans to extend our services outside of the United States. Thank you.

  38. Hank says

I'd like to get two lines with voice, text and data through Consumer Cellular. The coverage map shows we should have “good” coverage where we are most of the time BUT a nearby friend directly on AT&T using an iPhone 4s has reception problems. Since you use AT&T's network, do different GSM phones get better reception than others? Also, does CC have any plans re 4g?

    Thanks.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Hank. Thanks for the question. I don't have any news to report on the 4G front. However, our risk-free trial period might come in handy in a situation like this. We can set you up with one cell phone so you can test the reception out in your area. If it doesn't work out, you can return the phone for a full refund. If you're interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  39. jeff says

I'm wanting an Iphone 5 and understand they have the nano-sim. Question- If I buy an unlocked phone from apple, which comes with the nano-sim installed, is there any reason why this combination wouldn't work with CC??

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Jeff. In order to use our cell phone service, you'll need a SIM card from Consumer Cellular. Unfortunately, we don't offer Nano SIM cards and our service won't work with the Nano SIM that comes pre-installed in iPhones purchased directly from Apple. Thank you.

  40. Paul Knight says

I have “Windows 8 Pro” on my desktop computer; therefore, I would like to have a “Windows 8” Smartphone. Would you please advise if and when you could add a “Windows 8” Smartphone to your Consumer Cellular phone sales list?

Hi Paul. Thanks for the question. We don't have any plans to offer a Windows smartphone. However, if you purchase one elsewhere, we can send you a FREE SIM card if you're interested in testing out our cell phone service in that smartphone. Hi, I want to get a sim card to try out the service …I have an AT&T IPhone 3G available…I'm nervous about transferring my existing Verizon cell phone number over to the new phone and service…Can I temporarily get a phone number than switch over later???…Also is there a cost to that? and typically how long is the process of switching…

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Ron. Yes, you can get a temporary number if you're interested in testing out our cell phone service. If it works out well for you, you can then cancel that number and transfer your cell phone number over from your current provider. If you're interested in pursuing that option further, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

  42. Ron says

Thanks Dominic… One more question please ..Once I'm ready to cancel the temporary number to transfer to my current number..what is the process and how long will it take???…thanks again for your reply.

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Hey Ron. I'd highly recommend speaking to one of our customer service experts about the process. We can cancel your temporary number at any time and send you a new SIM with the cell phone number that you'd like to transfer over to our service. Once you have the new SIM card, the transfer could take just a few minutes. If you're interested in learning more about the process, please feel free to contact us at 888-548-6490. Thank you.

Please pass along another request for CC to offer a nano-sim for the iPhone 5! I did take the CC sim to the Verison store as they have a nano cutter and put the sim into the iPhone 5. I was basically oblivious to the concerns about ruining it and I got lucky and it works. It would be much nicer to have it alreay available tho!

  44. katherine m says

Consumer Cellular is an awesome cell company especially for lower budget Consumers. They also have professional customer service, and are very quick to really assist you.
It would be nice if your cell phones were more of the newer version.
    Go Consumer Cellular!

  45. Paula says

I am really impressed about the interaction with customer service in the blog. Questions being asked and answered in less then a week time! I have dealt with other services that have automated operators, NO HUMAN. Very irritating. I am looking to change my current plan which has lousy coverage. I have only had it less then 1 month and already hate it. I will be calling you to talk about how to switch over.

  46. Paula says

Also, I am tired of buying sim cards for different plans and they are not cheap. Free sim cards! I love you already! Will call in the morning in decent hours.

  47. kim says

I purchased an unlocked At&t iPhone 5 last December. I did cut down my SIM card and installed it into my iPhone 5. It works just fine. You can purchase the cutters on Amazon for under $10. There are only a few things that do not work on my iPhone due to Consumer Cellular: cannot accept or send 'group texts' and cannot accept or send photos in text. No issues other than those. It will be nice once CC has the technology to support these things, as I had wanted an iPhone for years and just now am able to have and use it with the best cell company ever!

  48. Ally says

I am thinking about buying an iphone, and was wondering if there was a way i can get one through consumer cellular. If so, how much would it cost?

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for your question. While we do not currently sell the iPhone, we do have two new models that we started selling just this week. We just introduced the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate and the LG 930 to our existing lineup of phones. 49. Colin says

Hi I have a question can I use my iPhone 5 that is AT&T on your network?

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Good question, Colin. Thank you.

  50. Ralph says

I'd like to get an iPhone5 and connect to Consumer Cellular. You had an iPhone last year you were vending as one of your phones. Any chance for an iPhone5?

I have an inactive Samsung SGH-A737 with an AT&T 3g sim card.
Can I transfer my CC sim from my motorola wx345.
If so, can I then connect to the internet via my wireless access pointg (hot spot).
If not can I get a new sim for the samsung?

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you Alec for your inquiry. Your SIM card will most likely work in that phone. It won”t hurt it to try it and see if all the features you like work when you move the SIM over to the Samsung. There will be some settings which will need to be changed to get the data to work. We would be happy to help you with this. Just give us a call at 1-800-686-4460..

  53. Elena says

Hi… I read through the threads and understand that you have new androids available. However, last year you offered the iphone3, which I have and am quite happy with the unit. I was wondering if you had any considerations to offering a refurbished iphone4…? I would like to stay with the iphone family due to the seamless ability to interact with the other products from apple ( iPad, desktop etc) Is it possible to sign up for an alert or something letting me know if there are negotiations or offerings as to any refurbished iphone programs ?

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Hello, Elena. At this time we do not have plans to offer more Apple products and we do not have an alert system for this. We tend to bring in new phone models a few times a year. Keep checking back for our newest products.

Hi, I have a motorola i576 company flip phone. Nextel was provider but went out of business. can I use your sims card with this phone to activate. thanks

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the question. To be able to use our SIM card, you phone must be an unlocked GSM phone. Check to see if it takes a SIM card. Typically Nextel phones do not. If you need help with this, please call 1-800-686-4460

  55. Mary says

Any plans to get a nano SIM card for the iPhone 5?

    • Tina at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the question Mary. At this time we do not have plans to offer a nano SIM but we update our phones a few times a year. Keep checking back for our newest offers.

I have an Iphone 4, because I used to be with AT&T and they were charging way to high, which is why I went to comsumer celluar because your plans cant be beat. but I was wondering If I were to get this new sim card that would fit on my iphone 4, could be still on the same plan that I had chosen

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Ronald. Yes, you can still be on the same cell phone plan. In fact, you can select any of our plans, we won”t force you into a particular plan just because you have an iPhone. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact us at 888-345-5509. Thank you.

I just picked up a Iphone 5s today, the at&t 16g from the apple store. I also picked up a sim card from sears. I took out the at&t nano sim card and install the consumer cellular sim card after I trimmed it down to the nano size. I called up consumer cellular and they activated my phone and everything works great.
    Thanks

    • Zoe says

Shawn–did you experience any dilemmas when you tried to install the nano sim card into your iPhone 5s? (i.e. does the MMS work normally?)

  60. Robert says

If I get a free Consumer Cellular sim and cut it down to nano size and it doesn”t work will Consumer Celluler issue me another free sim? Can anyone who has had success at cutting their own nano sim share the brand and/or vendor who sold you the cutter? I really want to get an iPhone 5s.
    Thanks

    • James says

Easy to cut SIM card to nano SIM size see http://www.airportal.de/nanosim/

Takes all of 2 minutes per card

I have done this for iPhone 5, 5c and 5s

      • Jamey says

Success getting MMS on iPhone 4s, 5 and 5s with Consumer Cellular using the SIM switch technique shown on with both video and words on this site (rather than jailbreak) http://www.prepaidphonenews.com/2013/09/did-ios7-update-break-your-at-mvno.html …Scroll down to link from Jamey that has a link to the needed Consumer Cellular MMS settings. Turns out iPhone does not allow MMS to be updated with the APN so these settings must be done manually…You will need a SIM card from other than AT&T or an AT&T MVNO. I used a SIM from overseas and reportedly T-mobile SIM will work too. My daughter found the lack of MMS a deal-breaker as she missed a group text from her employer and missed an important meeting which prompted me to find this solution.

  61. Shawn says

I picked up a AT&T I phone 5s from the apple store. I remove the at&t sim card and used a small cutters to make the Consumer Cellular sim card the same size as the at&t shim I removed. I used the at&t sim card as a template. I also had a file to smooth out the cuts to makes to make it fit in to the sim try. Its was really easy. Your just cutting the plastic round the metal sim card. I think if you mess up your out $10. Try again. It work the first time for me. Here is a link to the cut I used nothing special. http://www.northstarmfg.com/product/88-343.html
No dilemmas just took my time maybe a half hour cut slowly.
There are some features that do not work but it is a good trade off for cool phone and a cheap bill.

    • Robert says

      Thanks Shawn,
Can you tell me more about the features that do not work.
      Thanks

    • Katherine says

Shawn mentions the iphone is “the at&t” and that he removed its at&t SIM card. That means AT&T subsidized the purchase in exchange for a service agreement. AT&T regularly audits serial number databases of the phones they subsidize. When they find yours they will block that iPhone. If you switch service providers, they will again find it and block it.

  62. Shawn says

I paid full price for the Iphone 5s it was not subsidized. I pick the at&t phone because Consumer cellular uses the at&t network and they recommend you use an at&t phone out of contract. That is what I did when I bought it from the apple store I paid full price out of contract. Sending pictures you need to use email instead of text. And you need to dial in to get your voice mail.

  63. Robert says

Has anyone tried the Verizon version iPhone 5s?
According to Apple specs the Verizon model can support both cdma and gsm services ( Verizon, AT&T and TMobile) but the AT&T and TMobile (unlocked) iPhones will only work with gsm. I”ve also read that the Verizon version is the way to go if you travel outside the US and need all services.

  64. Robert says

That wasn”t an add for Verizon. Just asking if anyone tried it on Consumer Cellular.
    Sorry about that.

    Update on Nano SIM Cards:

We just wanted to post an update here since many of you have asked about Nano SIMs. The good news is that Nano SIM cards are now available. You may order them via our site or feel free to call us directly to order one. If you have any additional questions or if you need more information, please feel free to call us at 888-345-5509. Thank you.

  66. WindowsGuy says

Heads up windows phone lovers who want to us CC for your service.

Microsoft store is selling Lumia 520 windows 8phone for $49. It is ATT go phone, NO CONTRACT, and uses micro sim. I bought one (so cheap) but don”t have microsim in my current CC rugby phone so I have not tested. Should work fine and once I test I may go back and buy another one as a spare. CC and a WP8 phone would be excellent.

  67. Steve says

I have and unlocked iPhone 5 that has a “nano” sim. Does Consumer Cellular support the nano sim?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Yes, we do have Nano SIM cards available. Feel free to order one via our website or if you prefer, you may call us at 888-345-5509 and we”ll send you one for free. Thanks!

  68. Stacy says

    Do you have refurbished phones?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Stacy. All the phones listed on our website are brand new phones. However, we do have a small stock of returned phones that we sell through our call center at discounted prices. If you”re interested in looking into that option, please feel free to contact us at 888-345-5509. Thank you.

  69. Noniemae says

I have a apple iphone4 that I have had unlocked and want to change to another service and now have service with AT&T and wanted to know if I would get all the options now provided with my existing iphone4 if I switched to your service. Would it be as compatible with my phone as AT&T is?

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Yes, it will work with our service. However, we”ll have to assist you with changing a few settings in order for all the features to work correctly. If you”re interested in pursuing this option further, please feel free to call us at 888-345-5509. Thank you.

  70. Tim says

Can the iPhone 4S work on the CC network? I have one that was originally used on the VZ network. Apple claims it’s a world phone, meaning it has a SIM card slot, so in theory it should work. Thanks!

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Tim, great question! In general, an unlocked GSM capable phone will work with our service, but the best way to find out is to try our free SIM card. In general, Verizon phones are not a good fit with our network as they operate on the CDMA network instead of GSM. Please feel free to contact us at 888-345-5509, and we can get a SIM card on its way to you. Thanks!

  71. Wendy says

can an iPhone 4 previously from Virgin be used with your SIM card?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Wendy- good question! In most cases, a Consumer Cellular SIM card works well with an unlocked GSM phone or one that was previously used with AT&T. A phone previously used with Virgin is generally not a good fit as Virgin operates on the CDMA network. If you have any additional questions or would like more information, a member of our support team would be happy to help. Just give them a call at 888-345-5509. Thank you for commenting!

  72. Liz says

I have an iPhone 5s with T-mobile. It is a purchased phone on an installment plan. I know full payment will be due with them if I switch but the plan is “no contract.” Do you know if I will be able to use this phone with Consumer Cellular without a hassle? If there is a problem, could they solve it at a Consumer Cellular location rather than by phone?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Liz! For most cases, you can bring an unlocked GSM phone or one that was previously used with AT&T onto our service without hassle. Our customer care team members are experts on which phones work best- if you give them a call at 888-345-5509, they can talk to you about your specific model. Then they will walk you through the process of using one of our SIM cards, which you can do from home. Thanks again!

  73. David says

This may already have been suggested, but here goes. I have no complaints at all with your service, and I have used it for over 5 years. However, what would make it an outstanding service?! Create roll over minutes and roll over text messages. And don’t charge me for INCOMING messages! Many of the prepaid plans offer this. Why can’t Consumer cell?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the comment, David. We don’t offer roll-over minutes or messages as we find that most people who have that type of plan are probably paying for more minutes or messages than they need. That’s why we allow you to change your plan anytime you want, right up until the end of your billing cycle. Thank you again for posting!

  74. Felipe says

I have read that about a year ago, you do not support Nano-sim card for the iphone 5/5s. Are Nano-sim card now available as of May, 2014?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for the comment, Felipe! We do have the Nano SIM available, which works well with the iPhone 5 and 5s. Even better, it’s absolutely free! You can find one here on our website, or if you like, you can contact our customer care team at 888-345-5509, and they can get one on the way to you, as well as answer any questions you may have. Thanks again!

  75. Glenn says

I have a Motorola Razr M with a sim card from Verizon, will your sim card work in my phone?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Glenn. In general, phones from Verizon don’t work well on our service as they use the CDMA network instead of GSM. Our SIM cards work best with an unlocked GSM phone. If you have any other questions, our customer care team would love to help you. Just give them a call at 888-345-5509. Thank you again for commenting!

  76. Caroline says

If I use your financing option to purchase a new phone through CC,
can I pay off the balance sooner, or am I locked into the 20 monthly payments?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Caroline! Our EasyPay program is a great way to get a new smartphone on a budget. You can definitely make early payments, and can pay the balance whenever you want. Just remember, you do need to be on our convenient AutoPay program to take advantage of EasyPay. If you have any questions, or would like to get started with a new smartphone, just give us a call at (888) 345-5509. Thank you again!

  77. Bob says

I have been with Consumer Cellular for about 5 years and purchased the Motorola Razr v3 which as worked flawlessly. Lately, my outgoing calls give me a “Call Failed” message, and incoming calls go to voice mail. My Network jumps around with 1 bar, 2 bars, three bars, or Emergency Only. I called Consumer Cellular and was told I would probably have to buy a new phone because the AT&T towers do not connect well with the older phone. Why should I have to purchase a new phone. I paid $100 for the Motorola Razr…..Shouldn’t Consumer Cellular update my phone to a phone that will work….that is the same or better then the one I have….at NO COST or at least a credit of what I paid for my phone towards an updated phone of my choice.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for commenting, Bob. We work hard to offer a variety of affordable phones with the latest technology. Our Consumer Cellular Envoy is just $35! We also offer EasyPay for some of our smartphones to make them more affordable. You can take a look at our phones here. If you have any questions, please call us at (888)345-5509. Thank you again!

  78. Nathan says

Do you guys offer support for 4G (HSPA+) on iPhones? I know that you offer 3G (HSPA) and LTE but wasn’t sure about the 4G.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Nathan. We can support 4G on iPhone 5S and 5C. If you have any other questions about iPhone, take a look at our comparison page here. It’s a great resource. Thank you again for the questions!

  79. Susan says

Hi, I’ve read some other posts but I just want to make sure. I have an unlocked iPhone 5C that I am currently using with Verizon with one of their nano SIM cards. Will this not work with Consumer Cellular, even though you also have a nano SIM card now?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for the question, Susan. Our SIM cards work with phones that use GSM technology, which is why AT&T phones or an unlocked GSM version work well. Verizon phones typically use CDMA technology. If your iPhone is a GSM version, our service might be a good fit. If you give our customer support team a call, they can help you determine if your phone would work with our service. Please call us at (888)345-5509. Thank you again for the comment!

  80. Bob Tercero says

I spoke with the apple “geniuses” and they told me that the Verizon iPhone 5 and up are BOTH CDMA and GSM. Therefore they will work with CC. They also told me that Verizon phones are unlocked so even better.. Apple makes all newer iPhones with two radios CDMA and GSM. All these phones have a nano sim card. As soon as my contract is up with Verizon, I plan on getting the CC nano sim card and inserting into my iPhone 5. I’ve heard that the only thing that maybe will not work, is the 4G LTE as Verizon is on a different frequency band. Who care? I’m not signing up to CC for fast data speeds just reliable texting and talking.

  81. Arnold Scribner says

My son has an ATT iPhone that he has left over from a recent upgrade. Can I use that phone with CC and one of your sims or does it need to be unlocked first. Anxious to try your service.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for asking, Arnold. It sounds like that phone would be a good fit, but you will want to get it unlocked. Once you’ve had the chance to do that, just give our customer service team a call at (888) 345-5509, and they can get a SIM card on it’s way to you. Thanks again!

  82. ilovemyphone says

I have a phablet (phone/tablet) with two slots for sim cards will the dual sim card work for me?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for asking! Your phablet will work in the same way as most phones that come over to our service- an unlocked, GSM phone works best. The best thing would be for you to call our customer service team at (888) 345-5509, and they can help you choose the SIM that works best with your phone. Thank you again for the comment!

  83. Jim says

I have a Verizon motorola android yr. 2012, 4g lte model xt875 phone. Will it work on your network?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Jim. Generally, Verizon phones are not a good fit with our service, as they use CDMA technology, and we use GSM. An unlocked, GSM phone works best with our SIM cards. Thank you again for asking!

do I understand correctly that your service will not work with Verizon phones..our phones are:
    -Iphone 5S
    -Samsung Galaxy 5S

If not, plans for correcting this?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for reaching out to us, Pete. Our service works best with unlocked GSM phones, while Verizon operates on the CDMA network. We recommend one of two options: you can purchase a phone through Consumer Cellular, or you can use one of our free SIM cards with an unlocked GSM phone. If you have any questions about which phones work best with Consumer Cellular, please give us a call at 888-345-5509. We will be happy to work with you to find an option that meets your needs. Thank you!

I just signed up for CC service and received my SIM card today. I plugged it into my Verizon iPhone 4s and it worked right off the bat. Verizon’s web site says that all their phones are unlocked. I can confirm that this is true at least for the iPhone 4s that I have. The model number is MD276LL/A. Hope this helps others who are thinking of switching from Verizon to Consumer Cellular.

We just purchased an unlocked i phone 6 and want to use Consumer Cellular with the AT&T network. Does each network require a different nano sim card? Or will the same nano sim be capable of using both networks? Or do you throw a switch at the office and determine which network a phone is paired with? Thank You!

Thank you for asking, Jack. At this time, we don’t currently offer that service, but if that changes in the future, we will be sure to let customers know. We appreciate feedback like this as it lets us know what additional features and services would be useful for our customers. Good question, Caroline. If the phone is unlocked, and has a slot for your SIM card, then it sounds like it will be a good fit! The best way to find out is to test it with your SIM card. We may need to adjust some settings for all of the features such as text messaging to work, but we’re happy to help you with that at 888-345-5509. Thank you for reaching out to us today!

  96. Johnnie Jackson says

Is it possible to use a tablet on the consumer cellular network? Do I need something special to achieve this goal? Thank you in advance for your help in this matter, Johnnie

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a good question, Johnnie! Some customers have had success with using an unlocked GSM tablet with our service. However we don’t recommend that you use a tablet to connect to data simply because tablets are designed to use data on a regular basis, more so than many smartphones. You are more than welcome to test the service by placing one of our SIM cards in your device. However, please keep in mind that our highest data plan is 4 GB. Thank you.

Do they work with LG curve Boost mobile phones

    • Dominic at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Felicia! For most cases, you can bring an unlocked GSM phone onto our service without hassle. Our customer care team members are experts on which phones work best- if you give them a call at 888-345-5509, they can talk to you about your specific model. Then they will walk you through the process of using one of our FREE SIM cards. Thanks again!

  98. Susan Rooney, MA, LPCi, GGCP says

Hi. I received a sim card from you last week. I got a cheap phone to use temporarily until I can get another good phone. However, I couldn’t get that phone to work (it was an ATT phone).

I don’t know why I keep hearing that Verizon phones don’t use or have a place for a sim card, as my Verizon (unlocked) LG G3 has a sim card. I took it out and put in the card you sent and it seems to be working fine. Only thing is the phone obnoxiously tells me I’ve lost service ever so often, but I can make calls, etc.

Not sure what’s going on, why Verizon phones aren’t supposed to use sim cards….

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Susan. Some newer Verizon smartphones do have a space for a SIM card, and these may work well with our service. Other types, such as many feature phones used with Verizon, may not have a slot for the SIM card. We’re happy to work with you over the phone to adjust the settings in your G3. Please give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we’ll be ready to assist you. It is best if you can call us from another phone to make the process go smoothly. Thank you for reaching out to us today, and we look forward to working with you!

If it is more convenient for you, Target and Sears stores also offer our SIM cards. Once you have the SIM card, just give us a call and we will help you get started. 100. Bobbi says

I just signed up with CC and was sent a SIM for my unlocked Sprint iPhone 5. (Yes, I informed her of the carrier and type of phone immediately) When I insert the sim it tells me it is not compatible with this sim carrier?? Now CC has already had my service with Sprint shut off, so now I have NO phone at all!!! Why did the person I originally contacted not let me know that my Sprint (yes it’s unlocked) iPhone 5 would not work with your service??? And why did they have my Sprint service shut off before they knew whether or not it would work??

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

That certainly sounds frustrating, Bobbi. I was able to take a look at your account, and I see that Lilia, our customer account advisor was able to assist you and get your service working. Thank you for your patience! In most cases, SIM cards work well right away, but at times we do need to make adjustments to settings to get all features up and running. If we can assist you with anything else at this time, please don’t hesitate to call us at 888-345-5509. Thank you for reaching out to us, and we hope you have a great day!

I just have bought a Windows Phone (BLU Win HD LTE) but I can’t connect to CC 3G nor 4G network. If I put the chip in my wife’s Iphone it works well. Please, advise what should I do to connect my Windows Phone in CC network and have my 3G back!?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, Flavio. I was able to take a look at your account, and I see that Briana, our customer account advisor, was able to assist you with the change in settings that was needed. I have a Verizon Iphone 5c (model ME555LL/A) & a Verizon Iphone 5s (model ME341LL/A; version 9.2.1(13D15) that I’d like to switch over to CC, will they be compatible & work with your sim card?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting, Sherri. While unlocked GSM phones work best, we have had some luck with the newer iPhone models from other carriers. The best option is for you to try your phone with our SIM card. We may need to help you change some settings manually, so feel free to contact us at 888-345-5509 once you have it in hand. While we can’t guarantee that your phone will work with our service, we will certainly do our best. You can find our SIM cards at your local Target or Sears store, here on our site or we can send you one if you give us a call. We appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us, and we hope to see you as a customer soon!

  104. GARY says

Is Hawaii considered/included in US service? Had another carrier and they charged roaming for Hawaii.

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

That’s a good question, Gary! Hawaii is considered to be within the U.S., so you are not subject to any roaming fees. In fact, we have good coverage for much of the Aloha state! You can check your local area on our coverage map here, or we’re happy to speak with you about it over the phone at 888-345-5509. Thank you for reaching out to us, and we hope to speak with you soon!

  105. Malton Cox says

Hey I’m needing a Verizon sim card can I can a free one

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for asking, Malton. We only have our own SIM cards, but you may be able to use it with your device. In general, our SIM cards work best with phones used previously with AT&T or Verizon, but we’re happy to see if your device is a good fit. You can find our SIM cards at your local Target store, here on our website or we can help you order one over the phone at 888-345-5509. We appreciate you reaching out to us, and we hope to see you as a Consumer Cellular customer soon!

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for posting, Barbara. In general, unlocked GSM phones, such as those used previously with AT&T or T-Mobile can be used with our SIM card. The best way to know for sure if your phone will work is to test it with our SIM card. It’s risk-free, and you can pick one up at your local Target store, order one on our website here or call us to order at 888-345-5509. 110. Shawnna Bacco says

Hi! I have a Samsung J3 emerge which the sim card hasn’t been activated yet. Would I be able to use this phone with consumer cellular?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thank you for posting your question, Shawnna! Our SIM cards can be used with most fully unlocked GSM devices, such as those used previously with AT&T or T-Mobile. You can learn more about using our SIM card with your phone here. We do recommend that you verify with the previous provider that the device has been unlocked, as we aren’t able to do that for you. If you have any other questions for us, please feel free to give us a call at 888-345-5509. We appreciate you posting, and we hope you have a wonderful day!

  111. Kent says

I’m thoroughly disgusted with consumer cellular. I’m a long-term customer with multiple phones. We use the AT&T system, and when phones are replaced, consumer cellular gives us T-Mobile SIM cards with the new phone(s). What’s up with that? Are you promoting T-Mobile?

    • Thanks for reaching out, Kent. Our service uses two different nation-wide networks and the SIM card sent with new equipment should get you the best coverage and services available in your area. If you’re unhappy with the service you’re receiving please give us a call at 888-345-5509 and we can discuss this further. Thank you for taking the time to post, and we hope to speak with you soon!

Will these dual sim cards work in the samsung galaxy A70 phones?

Would be nice also if you sold more samsung phones.

    Thanks

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi Buzz, the SIM cards that we offer with our service are all 3-in-1 SIM cards, so they can fit in any phone. If your Samsung Galaxy A70 is unlocked, GSM-compatible, and VoLTE-capable, then you can try using it with our service. We can’t guarantee compatibility, but we’ll do all we can to get it working with our service. Additionally, we definitely appreciate your feedback about our available Samsung phones and will pass that along for consideration.

Can I or how can I get a second sim card for use with my tablet too? Sometimes I like to use my phone and other times I prefer to use my tablet all depending on what I’m doing.

    Thanks!

    • Nicole at Consumer Cellular says

Hi John, a phone number can only be associated with one SIM card at a time. If you want service on your tablet, then it would be a second line of service, which you can add by calling us at 888-345-5509 or by logging into your account here.

One way would be to give us a call at 800-686-4460 or by going online to our website here to place an order online. Alternatively, you can also pick one up from our partnered retail locations. To find the location that is closest to you, visit our website here.

We ordered a new phone for my husband and it is still stuck in Oregon. If we go to target and get the sims card for his other phone will we still be able to use his same number. He needs his phone for business and were hoping that the new one would get here in 3-5 days like told us. We ordered it on the 11th.

    • Hi Shiela, thank you for your post. I apologize for the delay that has been experienced with receiving that order. Unfortunately, there have been some major delays with USPS getting orders delivered. You can pick up the phone from a partnered Target location though and use your husband’s number. Once the phone arrives, you can set up a return for it once it arrives.

  127. Procrustes says

And what about nano sim cards and LTE smartwatches? If the little sims function like the big ones, doesn’t it follow that the watches with stand-alone phones built in should work on the service CC piggybacks on?

    • Hi Procrustes, thanks for your question. At this time, most of the newer smartwatches are using e-SIM cards which we don’t have access to. You are welcome to try one of our Nano SIM Cards in the watch, but we coudln’t guarantee compatibility for all models, each line does have its own number, we couldn’t put an existing number on two SIM cards.

  128. Procrustes says

Thanks for the info. As you say, most of the newer smartwatches–those with all the features one wants–use e-SIMs rather than nano cards, for whatever reasons. Impatience, rather than desperation, would drive me to use a less well-known brand with a removable chip.

In the meantime, any idea when CC will have access to e-SIMs?

Do you have SIM cards compatable with the “Alcatel LINKZONE Mobile 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot”?

    • Hi Ron, thanks for your interest in our service! We can’t guarantee compatibility for it, if it’s a device that is unlocked from all other carriers, is GSM-compatible, and VoLTE capable it may work with our network. IF it doesn’t end up being compatible, our smartphones do offer a hotspot feature that you can use instead.

Consumer Cellular needs to FESS UP & TELL THE TRUTH = Begin TELLING its customers that its UN-ACTIVATED sim cards expire in 30 days if not used at all. WHY? You do NOT say this ANYWHERE = website, literature, YouTube videos that I watched, nowhere about an expiration date on UNACTIVATED CC SIMs. Please update your M&P’s = Methods & Procedures . . unless that’s part of some hidden greed or agenda? I am not sure why though. It is just a DELAY bringing on a phone customer to your network, and frustrating customers if they already have a sim? This ACTION could cause CC to LOOSE customers in the long-run! BE CAREFUL!!

    • Hi there, I apologize that this was not explained when the line was canceled or suspended. We can only hold a line for up to 30 days before it’s released and we have to order a new SIM card. Keep in mind though, our SIM cards are free to order if a new one is needed for the account. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and your concerns and suggestions have been passed along to the appropriate department for going forward in the future.

Hello, I was wondering if you have a free SIM card for iPads. I believe I have one of the latest iPad ,it does have a sim tray. Thank you for your time.

    • Hi Olivia, thanks for your question! We can’t guarantee compatibility for the iPad. If it is an unlocked device that can take a physical SIM card, it may work on our service. If you’d like, you can actually double-check the IMEI for the iPad to see if it’s compatible. Just go to our website here to look into that.
