Free, Easy Apps Make Photo Editing A Snap

The camera on your phone can be more than just a great convenience. With the right apps, you can also edit your photos and turn them into something really special! Just a few extra clicks will let you organize, change the look of, or share your photos with total ease.

Many of the photo sharing apps you’re probably already using, like Instagram (which we covered here), include some basic editing tools. Here are my recommendations for a few additional photo apps that let you do a bit more, so you can really fine-tune the specific look and feel of your photos. I’ve selected these for both the unique features they offer and, perhaps more importantly, how simple they are to use. Each of the apps included here are available for both Android smartphones and iPhone, and can be downloaded for free.

If you’re looking to touch up imperfections in your snapshots—get rid of red eyes, maybe smooth over a few blemishes, or lighten up the color contrast or warmth—you’ll enjoy Photo Editor by Aviary. This easy but comprehensive editing tool lets you completely customize any picture using cosmetic tools and filters. You can also adorn your photos with stickers, text in a variety of fonts, or background patterns—the perfect way to create a distinctive Facebook post or a holiday card. It’s intuitive to use—it even has a one-tap auto-adjust feature, letting you change color, brightness and contrast to recommended levels with a single click —and is a great way to convert quick snapshots into beautifully composed photographs.

Perhaps you’d prefer to unleash your creative side and do something a little quirkier. In that case, I recommend trying Prisma. By applying photo effects and modern art filters, you transform your pictures to look like paintings in the style of famous artists! This technology lets you create rich, vibrant works-of-art. Ever wanted to create a photo of your wife or daughter looking like the spitting image of the “Mona Lisa”? Prisma is the way to do it!

Now that you’ll be editing your pictures into gallery-worthy creations, you’ll probably need more space to store them, too. For that, I’ve found nothing better than Google Photos. It offers unlimited backup and cloud storage of your photos, and it’s easy to organize them into albums, collages, and more.  You can also share your photos with friends, or to social media, instantly. And for iPhone users, using Google Photos is a handy way to free up memory on your device while still having easy access to your photos.

We’ve come a long way from keeping shoeboxes full of blurry snapshots in the attic. If you treasure the memories that your photos capture as much as I do, you’ll enjoy taking advantage of these great digital tools which let you enhance and preserve them right from the convenience of your cellphone.
