It’s a Beautiful Day…to Try These Weather Apps

One of the few remaining things a smartphone can’t do is control the weather. But by downloading a few select weather apps, you can at least have a good idea what to expect. They’ll help you accurately plan your day, making sure that if rain does falls on your parade, you’ll at least be prepared with an umbrella—or, on the flip side, the right sunscreen.

Managing your exposure to sunlight’s ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the best way to avoid sunburn and keep your skin healthy. You can rely on UV Lens- UV Index Forecast for iPhone & Android to learn when you need to be extra careful, and when you can safely enjoy the sun. It shows which hours have the highest UV exposure, and even lets you set a reminder to reapply sunscreen based on UV levels.

For an up-to-the-minute overview of your local weather, you can’t beat AccuWeather, for iPhone & Android. It’s simple to use, contains all the key information you’re looking for, and is also remarkably accurate. You can customize it to get minute-by-minute forecasts based on your address or GPS location, sign up for push notifications for severe weather alerts, and find convenient information like sunset and sunrise times, allergy forecasts and more.

If you love to frolic near the ocean, you should get to know Tides Near Me, for Android. It collects and displays information about current tidal conditions in your selected area. You can even check the conditions at beaches nearby to see if you can find something a little gentler (or more adventurous). Quickly learn the time of the last and next tide and even strength of the current, as well as when the sun and moon will rise or set. It includes fully automated tide tables, charts, and predictions.

These apps are free to download and use from either the App Store or Google Play Store. Don’t let weather conditions take you by surprise! With just a few swipes on your cellphone, you can fully monitor sea, sky, and land—and be ready for anything Mother Nature has to offer.

I suggest a widget/app like Chronus or Transparent Clock & Weather. These apps allow use of one of multiple weather service (like Weather Underground). The added benefit of these is that they include an option to update only on WiFi, avoiding using the data plan for weather updates. You can also refresh the weather manually on them.

Thanks, Ashley. Along these same lines, I use Aqua Mail as my email app. It’s the only one I’ve found that has a setting to sync or push only on WiFi. Aqua has a free version that allow, I believe, two email accounts and automatically documents their app in the signature. The paid version has more flexibility. I’ve used it for many year, even when I had an unlimited data plan.

I love having the ability to check the weather, the problem I’m having, is when I leave WiFi, I cannot load any data once on the road. I live in Houston, Tx, where coverage should be great. I have the Samsung S8, is there something that needs to be set-up to get data when away from WiFi? I have the 5 gig data plan with unlimited talk and text. Any suggestions?
