Smartphones are quite simply amazing machines. Just turn them on, and apps open quickly, navigation is responsive, and in general, every task runs smoothly and with maximum efficiency.
To help keep it that way, your phone—like any machine—needs some occasional TLC. Here are a few simple smartphone maintenance steps you can perform which will help keep your device performing at its peak.
For every task you perform, your phone is downloading and storing bundles of information. To keep your storage optimized:
- For Android smartphones, go to your Settings menu, and click on Storage.
- On iPhones, go to your Settings menu click on General, then Storage and iCloud Usage.
If your memory is full or close to it, move photos, videos, or music that you have stored to an SD card or cloud based storage. That way, you’ll free up additional storage space and help your phone run faster.
Likewise, your cache is where all temporary Internet and website files are stored. If you regularly access the Internet on your smartphone, this will fill up, which could slow down things like page loading. To clear your cache, go to Settings, then History, to find the option to clear your cache. This will keep your web browsing as good as new!
Apps are a wonderful part of the smartphone experience, but they can also take up a great deal of space. Review the apps you’ve downloaded to make sure you’re only storing ones you actually use, and delete any that you don’t. It’s also important to make certain you have the latest versions of all your apps. Check to see if any updates are needed, and do so while you’re connected to Wi-Fi. That way, you’ll preserve your cellular data as you download the newer versions, which can take some time.
Finally, make sure your phone is using the most current version of its operating system (OS). Apps are usually designed to work best with a specific OS. You can check to see which version of your OS your phone is running, and if an update is needed, by following these steps.
- For Android devices, go to the Settings menu, click on About Phone, then System Updates.
- For iPhone, go to Settings, then simply click on Software Update.
By regularly staying on top of these 4 items, you’ll keep your cellphone happy–and more importantly, it will keep you happy!
