This year's annual Grandparents Day contest is coming to a close. Entries came streaming in starting June 1st and based on public voting, the 100 most popular entries made it to the next round. This group has since been narrowed down to the top 50 semi-finalists, which is where we are now.
Selecting the semi-finalists was not an easy task. When the online dust settled, we had received more than 2,000 entries, well over a thousand more than last year's submissions. What an amazing collection of family stories we received, too!
From the widowed, working mother of two who can finally be a stay-at-home "mom" with her grandchildren, to the lessons a young boy learned while fishing with his wise, cigar-chomping grandfather, I hope their stories touched your heart, as they did ours.
On behalf of all of us here at Consumer Cellular, I congratulate the top 50 for a story well told. I’d also like to thank everyone for participating and making this year’s contest such an enormous success. You far exceeded our expectations!
We now have the challenging, yet pleasing task of choosing the five finalists. Those Fab Five will be announced on September 12th, as part of our Grandparents Day celebration. Less than two weeks later, we’ll unveil the grand prize winner as well as the two runners up at Life@50+, AARP’s National Event and Expo, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. We have a lot of decisions to make, so stay tuned. Or, better still, stay plugged in and visit our Grandparents Day website for the latest contest news.
It’s rare in business to be able to sponsor a contest that perfectly fits the company’s core mission. Consumer Cellular is first and foremost about connecting loved ones, which is what this contest is all about.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating family life across the generations.

Sally Beth Elms
At a point when others might be planning to retire or sit comfortably on the sidelines and watch the world go by, Sally Beth Elms has enrolled in college, working toward a degree in Substance Abuse Counseling. With her goal of becoming a counselor, it probably comes as no surprise that the word “trust” is an integral part of Sally's life.
Trust is also why she selected Consumer Cellular as her cell phone plan provider.
Sally checked into several different cell phone plans. She ultimately elected to go through the exclusive wireless provider for AARP members because she trusts the organization to partner only with companies that provide a great service at a great price.
"When my friends ask me what cell phone company I finally decided on, I tell them I picked one that is always 'there' for me… Consumer Cellular," she said.
When not in school or studying, Sally sings in the church choir. She considers herself a true "Rocker," and collects blues guitar albums and CDs. With two grown sons and five grandchildren (she calls them her "GK's"), and her educational and musical commitments, Sally is still able to keep in touch with everyone through the convenience of texting.
She initially chose the Anywhere 1000 and Connect Ready combination, which gave her 1000 minutes of talk time and 500 texts. In April of this year, Consumer Cellular upgraded its plans. Her plan was automatically changed to Anywhere 1200, giving her an extra 200 minutes each month at no extra charge.
"I really like Consumer Cellular's cell phone plans, because they're designed to fit the needs of a variety of people," said Sally. "I also appreciate the Usage Alerts, that are provided as a courtesy. That's got to be a unique service for a cell phone company!"
Sally trusts Consumer Cellular to cover her back, as well as look out for her future.
If I'm a current customer, can I still go to Sears to get a new phone?
Yes, by all means. Current Consumer Cellular customers who are interested in buying a new phone may want to drop by their local Sears store, where they can hold and handle a new phone before purchasing. When you call to activate your phone, just let us know you're a current Consumer Cellular customer and we'll take care of the rest. Our phones are available in nearly 800 Sears stores and over 200 RadioShack Franchise stores nationwide. To find the most convenient location, use our instant Store Locator.
Which Consumer Cellular phones are available at Sears?
We offer three of our most popular cell phones at Sears. They include our most affordable Motorola flip phone, an easy-to-use senior-friendly Doro phone, and a full-keyboard Nokia phone that's perfect for power texting. Stop by your local Sears store and look for the Consumer Cellular free-standing display in the electronics section.
