Hang Up or Hands Free?
Clearly, there's a "Hang Up and Drive" movement afoot. Five states currently ban handheld cell phones for all drivers: California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Washington; the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from talking on handheld cell phones while driving. Twenty-one states ban all cell phone usage by what's known as novice drivers (under, say, 17 or driving with a Learner's permit); 13 states do not allow drivers to text message.
And it doesn't stop at the state level. Individual counties that feel state law inadequately protects them are passing their own cell phone or texting laws. For example, Oneida County in upstate New York, about 100 miles from Albany, recently established a $150 fine for texting while driving.
In many cases, these laws are enforced under what's known as "primary enforcement." In other words, even if you don't commit another traffic offense, you can get a ticket just for holding and talking on your cell phone while driving.
Maybe it's time to consider a hands-free device.
The good news is Consumer Cellular's hands-free accessories are competitively priced and phone-specific. To order, you don't even have to leave your house. Just go to our Web site and pick out what you need. We'll ship the accessories to your home for free! So don't wait. Remember, the traffic ticket you save may be your own.

Edward Cookenham & Leanne Braddock
Edward Cookenham and his wife, Leanne Braddock, both retired from the US Navy and now reside in Bartlett, Tennessee. Ed works as the Security Supervisor at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital while Leanne is a Marriage & Family Therapist. Between the two of them they engage in a lot of family conversations: with five adult children and 12 grandchildren, not to mention three Siamese cats.
Although they've only been Consumer Cellular customers or a little over a year, they've been cell phone users for 17. In their spare time, Ed's an Amateur Radio buff (call sign: K3ORS) and Leanne likes to backpack. They both love to travel and return often to Iceland, where they were stationed while in the military (accompanying photo was taken in front of the President of Iceland's home). From ice to fire, their other favorite vacation spot is Death Valley.
Leanne's advice? "Don't drop your cell phone in the toilet!" She uses her phone both for work and to stay connected with her children, grandchildren and 96-year old mother (who is also a Consumer Cellular customer and loves it!). While on a business trip, Leanne accidently dropped her phone in the toilet. She called Ed, who called Consumer Cellular, and she got a new working phone in a matter of days! And it was already activated.
Bremerton, Washington, resident and student Elizabeth O'Gara knows what it takes to finish at the top. Elizabeth and her 3D animation partner, Brandon Burt, recently took first place at the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
Attending the conference was her first trip out of state without her parents. For the trip, she changed her Consumer Cellular plan to 200 minutes per month and was sure glad she did. With cell phone in hand, she had more than enough minutes to call friends and family to share with them the exciting news that she and her animation partner had won the gold!
Computer animation is not her only special interest, however. She knits, does calligraphy, and, of course, attends school. With her busy schedule, there's little time left in the day-or night-for Elizabeth to spend chatting on the phone, which is one of the features she likes most about her cell phone plan.
Elizabeth has been a Consumer Cellular customer for more than four years. "It's perfect for those of us who don't spend hours on the phone," said Elizabeth. "It's not too little and it's not too much. It's just right!" She especially likes changing her plan whenever she needs to, such as she did before her trip to Missouri, without being charged extra fees.
